Hi

not buying just yet, but in a few weeks. I just want to make sure i'm getting what a need.

D3100 combo

So do i buy the above with both lenses or just buy with the 18-55, or buy body only and then buy an all rounda lens, if their is such a thing. will be mainly used for holiday snaps and general snaps around the house of the kids.

any other things i may need, i have £600 ish and want brand new, from a shop and no ebay items.

cheers

I'd go for that, £500 for the body and the two lenses isn't too bad, especially when you consider Jessops charge £250 for the 55-200 VR on it's own....

You could buy the Body and 18-55 VR for £120 or so less, but then you'd need to spend at least £170 for the second lens when you bought that, so the kit looks like the way to go

The 200mm lens is none VR is this important, or would I best off seeing if they can do the VR for the difference in price.

Cheers for the reply

Ok cheers I'll just buy with the 18-55 for now, that should be ok. Not going back on holiday till may now. So I can learn a bit on how things work first.

Cheers

As a D3100 user with both the kit and 55-200 VR lens. I now find that the 18-55 lens is the one I use most.

From what I can see of your needs, I think youll be just fine with the 18-55 kit lens for the time being

In your budget I'd try and get body only and a 17-50 2.8 Tamron. This is a much better lens than the kit. If you end up finding you need a telephoto get a 70-300 VR later on.

Alternatively you can buy a K-r and for 650£ you get the camera, a 18-55 and the brilliant for the price 55-300. You will also benefit from built in image stabilisation, better built quality and similar image quality.

All these letters and number hert my head, i did research the D3100 a few months back. My plan was to buy one before i went on holiday, but taking 6 to Egypt holiday village used best part of all my funds.

I want to buy the best i can with £600 ish, now i don't mind spending more but i'm a noob when it come's to these, and only had point and shoot before. One of the resons i was looking at the D3100 is because it was on the gadget show and it had that built in user guide, and it said it was perfect for somebody like me.

I'm not going to spend ££££'s just want a nice camera that can take good pics, but i want DSLR.

I don't mind buying used from the likes of here, i have bought many items from forum members in the past. I will not buy from the likes of ebay though, to many scammers now a days just wanting money.

The only problem is i'm new and the rules don't allow me to at the mo.

I don't need it now, and the next time i go on my hols is when the kids break up in may.

Ho and the wife said i'm limited to £600 because i have an expensive hobby, i have a R/C helicopter, and R/C buggy for the little lad but this is also mine wink wink.

cheers for the inputs.

Hello, I got the deal above on my D5000, however I got both the VR lenses... so maybe shop around and see if you can find one with both VR lenses :D

I think you will be fine with the D3100 and the 18-55 kit lens. It's a great camera and there is loads of time before your holiday to see whether you need the longer reach of the 55-200. Good luck.

cheers for the reply's guy's, will i need any photo edit software. But same as the cam i'll be new to this to, so no expensive photoshop for me.

If i need some i'll need it cheap and easy to use.

cheers

Hi,

If you buy a new Nikon it should come boxed with ViewNX2 which is a basic editing software package which is probably all you'll need for now.

Details here (click)

ho what els will i need, i no i need a card but theres so many

Depends what you want to spend, SanDisk are quite expensive but very reliable. I myself use Transcend which I've found to be great, cost £14 for a 16gb card as apposed to £40+ for the SanDisk version.

Well Im back been a while, i bought a new heli, crashed it, fixed it, crashed it, still in bits but have all the parts for the rebuild.

Both crashers was nothing to do with me, a wire came out of the HC, the first time and the second a pin came out of the tail, but as this is my hobby it gets fixed when needed.

So I'm working hard as normal, well I clock in, and now no time to evan rebuild my heli so no rebuild means no crash and in turn DSLR funds.

So I look on the for sale section to find no D3100's, there is or was a D5000 I think but only did research on the D3100.

I haven't read through the whole thread but if you've only used point and click cameras in the past you'd be blown away by the D3100. I was. I've had it a month and still learning things about it. I brought it with the VR 18-55mm kit for a fantastic price from pixmania. Check them out and also some of the photos Iv been able to capture with the kit from my profile. Neil.

(also records HD video, be good for the family)

Well as my funds have been spent on other things, and now I don't have oat to spend them on I was looking in the for sale section only to find no D3100. Still in no major rush and plenty of time for one to pop up, I did read some old post in FS sec and was going from £275-£325 I think. So now I like the idea of a forum buy an save me a few hundred quid for heli parts should it want to be a lawn dart again.

Nice I will inform the wife when she's out of bed, and will prob make an offer.

Well now I have decided to buy one brand new, was going to buy used but as Warrenty is not transferable I think it's best to buy new, think there only £400 ish so less than £100 for peace of mind.

So now the only time I can get one is Saturday, as work at the mo is mental. I'll just nip out in my break and pick one up, unless I can buy online.

Well been to buy a D3100 and stock not due till march??? So bought the next one up, a D5100 in closing down sale £412, then got a 55-200 lens £180 for £126.

Think I got a bargin not sure about the lens but, stock is limited every where. Bloody Xmas shoppers.

Thats a brilliant price. I paid £440 for a D3100 form jessops last week.
You could've bought a couple at that price and sold one to take the sting out of the lens!

It's from best buy best be quick closing down and shut down on 15-01-2012, I was getting the D3100 but sold out now and I was paying £480 with kit lens but got this and I think better than kit lens for an extra £50.
