I currently have a 500D with a 400D for backup, up to now I've thought spend money on lenses and don't worry too much about the body, now I have all the lenses I want although I may collect a few more primes in future so I want to upgrade the main body I use.

I'm thinking I'll sell the 400D and use the 500D as backup. I don't have a huge budget but see that I could get a 5D Mki (used of course) for around £500 - is it worth doing this? Or should I wait and save my pennies for a new Mkii? I know a lot of pro togs that still use the Mki and have no intention of upgrading until their camera breaks but they've probably had it from new!

So do I risk a 2nd hand Mki??? Your thoughts please - anyone bought a 2nd hand Mki and got any feedback for me???

Thanks!

5D is a Fantastic body, but all depends what you are shooting.
AF system is abit slow

What are you shooting?

Portraits, some studio, some on location and weddings - although only 2nd tog on weddings for now!

What lenses have you already invested in? obviously, if you have gone for EF glass your ok with the 5D or 5D2 but if they are all EF-s you can’t use them and so may be better going for a 7d.

Mark.

All my lenses are EF fit! (Canon 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 & Canon 70-200mm f/4)

I've got a 550d and I fancy going full frame and I keep looking at the 5d mark I. What's the iso performance of the 5d like compared to the 550d?

Just a quick query - does anyone know if the 5D Mk1 is self sensor cleaning??? Thanks

5D would be a great choice, I love mine (coming from a 40D).

Unfortunately the tech is 7 years old, so no auto sensor cleaning and a poor rear LCD. But image quality is really top notch. ISO goes up to 3200 which is actually 1600 pushed a stop, but it's still OK.

It's not self-cleaning and they do need a clean every now and then though it's not a big deal to do it yourself.

The 5D is a pain for dust, but easy to sort with a rocket blower. No self cleaning gubbins!

I love my 5D, there is just something about the image quality that is just really nice.

Agree, image quality from 5D is in a different league, a great camera.

My 5D doesn't need any more cleaning than my 20D did. Mostly a Rocket does the trick and despite quite a few lens changes I think I've only needed to do one wet clean in the months since I bought the 5D. Dust in the VF is far more annoying IMVHO.

Thank you all.

I currently have a 500D and want to upgrade so this will become my backup. I'm torn between a 50D and a 5DMK1 both of which are within my budget and go for around the same money on ebay - the 50D does have the advantage of being sealed and self cleaning that the 5D does not, also the 50D is slightly newer with more pixels etc - however I fancy full frame.

My question is, is it worth going for the full frame or would my money be better spent on a 50D?

You say "sealed" but I don't think the 50D is weather sealed is it? If that's what you meant. It may be better sealed than the 5D but I don't think it's weather sealed as such.

The 50D does have more pixels, but the 5D's pixels are bigger :D

Well, I'm new here, but I will chime is.

I waited for the 5D II to come out, but now way....€ 3500? I think not!

I just sold my 7D and all EF-S lenses and switched to a second hand looking-like-new 5D. I used to browse the 5Dc (classic) photo forum over on POTN, and every time I thought to myself: "there is something about those 5D files".

Don't get me wrong, the 7D is fantastic, but the images have a plain look tot hem, unlike the 5D.

I could not be happier with the image quality I am getting now, and the AF is NOWHERE near as bad as it is sometimes made out to be, not even for moving subjects:

If it's image quality that counts, go for a 5D. Even if you don't like it, you could sell it again at a low loss.

Cheers.

I agree, the image quality is something else, it's hard to put into words, it's like a good quality 35mm film shot like Kodachrome. The best word I think that best describes the IQ is lush :)
I bought a 2nd hand 5D mk1 6 months ago and it blew me away, my 600D never looked the same. I've since sold it and bought a 5D mk2. I'm keeping the mk1 as its such a lovely camera. Yes it does get dusty, mine was filthy when I bought it, but I got a professional sensor clean done at Calumet, and now an occasional blow out with a rocket blower seems to keep the worst at bay.

Is it? I thought it was the same or worse ŵith regards to the outer points.

As far as I'm aware only the centre point on the 500D is cross type, whereas the 5D has 9. It's definitely subjectively better and I use them both. Plus you get the convenience of the joystick for AF point selection. :)

The only thing I regularly feel "I wish was better" with the 5D is the ISO limit and no live view for the times I'm doing macro.

I have now negotiated a deal for a 5DMKI with battery grip for £500 - hubby is collecting it this afternoon on his way home from work - I can't wait!

Great decision, I've had lots of dslrs over the last couple of years and the 5D was the only one I ever loved... But I've upgraded to the 2 just for added features but I miss my 5Dc. At least it went to a good home.

500 is a fantastic deal by the way. Probably the best monkey you'll ever spend

I kept my 5D classic when I bought the mk2, it was the 600d I sold, my posting, in hindsight looked a bit ambiguous. The 5D1 is a lovely camera, I know I really should let it go, but just cant bring myself to.

Its here and its in fab condition, so well looked after and all the original paperwork in file, its immaculate, the seller had the sensor cleaned the camera generally checked over with their local Canon dealer before I collected - think I got a good deal, especially as I'll probably sell the battery grip. Now looking forward to the weekend and having a good play about with my new toy!
