I am thinking of selling my car as I don't use it that much over the last few years, thread here >> https://www.talkphotography.co.uk/threads/mot-and-low-miles.599243/ wonder where the best place to stick it for sale? Just can't be bothered with all the hassle involved, especially all the stupid time wasters! Really get fed up of idiots asking what's the best price, they ask will you take x amount, when you say yes OK, they never reply! Wonder if I should try Gumtree/ Preloved or reluctantly the bay! My post count should be OK, I could try The Classifieds on here

I have always had good results using Auto Trader

Sold 2 cars with them, 1 sold within 3 days to the second person to view and the other sold within 1 day on going live to the first person who viewed the car

I would avoid the likes of Gumtree as that is where we encountered the most time wasters

It the Auto Trader still going? Obviously it must be, last time I bought that was about twenty years ago  . Probably all online now, not seen the magazine in shops...

Still available as both. Same with Exchange and Mart.

Autotrader is predominantly online these days - its probably your best bet , unless the car has the potential to be a 'scene vehicle' (like if its an old golf or similar) in which case double your asking price and put it on an enthusiast forum

People do put cars on the classifieds here occasionally btw

I thought that had long gone, not seen that in ages !

Actually I do remember the last time I bought the Auto Trader, I was looking at a G reg 1990 fiesta ( so obviously around 1990). The mag went a bit expensive, so I stopped buying it.

As others have said Autotrader appears to be the best. You can use places such as webuyanycar but they will give you a low price and then when you arrive attempt to reduce their offer further.

Just started to fill out the form for a valuation, but got to the bit were they want a mobile number, this is to text the valuation. Could end up getting masses of cold calls, so did not bother to go any further..

Just managed to do it without number ..

If you jump on Parkers - they'll give you an approx value for your car also - worth seeing if webuy.... are anywhere near with their value

Just got the valuation, don't think I will bother. At that price, I will keep it myself. If I can get a bit / lot more for it, I will try and sell it..

Just make a number up I did.

Pistonheads is another online forum for car sales.
I have sold a few without any hassle

If you don't want hassle, yet the best price, then the two just aren't compatible.

Alternatively just trade it in or use webuyanycar.

Jon

if the car you are selling is the C1 then unfortunately you will not get a very high resale value on it.
A friend has 2 C1's (1 for him & the other for his wife) he did not pay a lot for it & expects to almost 'give it away' when he gets rid of them.
I appreciate yours is in excellent condition, well serviced & very low mileage but webuyanycar etc don't take this into consideration when you try to get a price from them.
The only way for you to get reasonable money is have someone view the car & then make you a good offer.

Don't mind people knocking down a bit, that's what we do. Just stupid time wasters who have no intention of buying.

Best negotiation is when they are there in person. Why would you knock down the price for an anonymous nobody?

Yes it's my C1 I think I should sell, I know it's not worth a great deal as it did not cost me a great deal from new. Just it's deprecating and not getting used, so it seems a waste it just sitting there. The only time it runs is when I give it a run once every so often to keep things from seizing up, and when it goes for it's MOT.

If you advertise a car for for £1750, people will always contact you and say will you take £1500 etc. It's just what people do. Now if the price advertised was £1500, that person who asked about taking £1500 , will now say will you take £1300. It's just what people do :)

People always try it on, we always want to get something for less than the price should be. We feel we are getting a bargain then. Just look at us lot on here, what are we like buying a camera ;)

NOTE* people always make out they do not have the full amount, and will you take X amount as that's all they can go. Rubbish, they are trying it on.

I do a bit of research and find out what the car is worth

I then work out how much would be acceptable to me

From the two I work out my asking price leaving enough wriggle room between the two for people who want to try and get a bargain - it's all in the psychology of the sale

I don't disagree but if you agree to knock down £250 via email then they will find a hairline scratch and argue another £250 off ;) I've never negotiate via email. Make them come and take a look, and then we can talk.

I agree, people who try and do this via email usually end up being your time wasters.

Any serious buyer I would say would come and view the car before making an offer

From what I have seen trawling the net, probably an average of £2500. I will probably work a price somewhere in that region, and let them knock a little off, when they come to see if of course  . It does have a little mark here and there, so they will probably want to whine about that, although I will mention all that in the advert :)

I used E-Bay classifieds to sell my last car. This is where you can juts place the advert and not auction the car. You pay an advertising fee and no final value fee. When I last did it, it was £15.

I had several serious contacts within days. Because it's e-bay you get a chance to check the person's feedback and find out where they are from. You are under no obligation to reply to any.

If you are worried about haggling, just add £250 to the price you want for the car so that any buyer can feel like they have negotiated with you. Negotiation is always going to be part of selling the car

Take their valuation as about 50% of what it could be worth...

A dealer offered me almost exactly double what webuyanyoldshyte offered me earlier this year. And dealers offer lowball...

Sounds about right, as their offer was £795. I know they have to make a profit, but that's taking the pee !

Recently went on webuy & they offered more as a cash sale for my car than the dealer would give on a nearly new car.
I think you have to shop around & do your homework before you make a final decision.

Oh the days of advertising a car in the local evening paper on a Thursday , for it to be sold on the Friday. Phone would be ringing non stop, long after it had been sold.

I am certainly exploring all options, don't think local papers work anymore. Will probably be a web based sale.

I remember those good old days also. However there was no internet, less cars for sale & you only had the opportunity to purchase within set areas ie wales & west etc.

I think you have to accept a degree of hassle when selling a car, I just try and sort the wheat from the chaff and ignore people who look like obvious time wasters.

I've sold my last 3 cars via eBay with a fixed price listing - answering a few emails is par for the course imho.

Otherwise try a few forums classifieds :)

I've sold my last few cars on ebay. Not had a problem.

Remember to factor in fees when setting/accepting a price.

I really do want to sell it if possible this year, looks like it will probably end up on ebay..

to be frank (not my name) i have found e-bay to be the best sales point by far .it reaches a larger audience and stuff does actually sell without any hassle ,just describe fully and honestly with good pictures and sit back ,if the price is right it will go

just be 100% accurate with any defects/issues.
That's a very good point, my approach to selling a car is show it warts and all so provide pictures of the worst bits then advertise at a fair price that way the tyre kickers have nothing to kick so they just look at you pleading for £50 off.

I hate travelling to see a car that doesn't live up to the billing so I don't expect others to.

Good luck with the sale :)

Been pouring down with rain, so not had a chance to get car cleaned up. Going to give it a clean, and get some photos of it. Wonder if I should use the iphone or X10

Get a few pics taken & put it in the classifieds on here with a full description. (y) You never know ;)

Giving it a good clean inside and out will go a long way to helping you sell the car

Just keep the standard of cleanliness up all the while its for sale

Why waste your time? Tree, brick on accelerator, insurance claim.
