I have 2 grey spots on my sensor but i've never cleaned one bofore, i do have a cleaning kit and lots of cotton buds, i can see the mirror but is the sensor behind the mirror or above ?
Any tips because this is a new camera with less than 1000 clicks !
thankyou.

the sensor is behind the mirror - you can lock it up fpr cleaning with a menu item.

Hi Graham.

1st and most importantly, BE CAREFUL, whatever you do.
And when are you seeing these marks (what F number)?
Really mate, don't worry about dust bunnies, or you'll become like I was, and obsessed by it!
And spend a fortune on products that don't work. (And I really have spent ALLOT of money on sensor cleaning).

This little baby HERE should be all you need for your camera, as the dust isn't going to be 'welded' on.

Should you really feel the urge to clean it properly after the blower, come back and seek further advice mate, as there's many different ways of doing it.

Thanks, i did a mirror lockup and noticed it flips back down after about a minute, not something you want in the way poking through if that happens.
I had to clone out these marks on a couple of photo's thats all, cheers for links :)

Do not use cotton buds on the sensor, they will leave lint behind and make matters worse. Use the special swabs and fluid suitable for your type of sensor.

its not mirror lockup - its a cleaning setting - you need to turn the camera off to get the mirror to go back down.

First be sure it's actually going to affect your photos - take a shot at f22 against a blue sky, out of focus, and see if you can actually make out spots in the image. If you can't see anything very obvious, you don't need to do anything. *You will never get a sensor completely spotless* so don't get obsessive about it. Plenty of brand new Nikons come with dust already on the sensor. My D700 did, but it's not bad enough for me to worry about it.

If you do have a real issue with dust:

1. If it's a new camera, first ask Nikon - chances are they will do it for you for free.

2. If not, or you can't afford the time to send it off, first try what they tell you in the manual, which is using a blower brush clean it with the camera facing down. This will often work pretty well.

3. Think about paying a Nikon dealer to clean it for you.

4. If you want to clean it properly yourself (beware, as this is not supported by Nikon), then my advice is to get some Photographic Solutions sensor swabs (size 2) and a bottle of Eclipse E2, watch the demonstration video on their website and clean it *carefully but firmly* using that combo. I've used pretty much all the most popular cleaning gadgets and gizmos, and that's the only method I've found which works well every time. Budget on using two swabs on each clean, and don't use more than 3 drops of E2 on each swab. Photographic Solutions are the only company to my knowledge who have sufficient confidence in their own product to indemnify you against damage to the sensor if you do it correctly.

Good luck!

This rules out the powerful air compressor and airline method i was thinking about at work ! :shake:
I think i can put up with it for now then in the future take it to a dealer, thanks i'll stick to cleaning lenses :D

Lenspen SensorKlear, from what I've read this is a good and inexpensive way to clean your sensor and also very easy!!!!!!

If I get minor dust in the viewfinder or sensor, or if the mirror area looks dusty, I just do the normal process and the switch on the hoover and hold the nozzle close and works a treat. I never liked the idea of poking around on the sensor!

A combination of a blower and a lenspen sensorklear have yet to let me down.
