I have just about sold my Canon 450D and want to move over to the dark side of Nikon! lol

I very much prefer how they handle etc.

Now, choice.

I very much like the D90 but not sure about costs so what about the D80 people? Is that a worthy buy 2nd hand? I am only looking at the body as i have some Nikon Lenses in a relatives house.

Or, should i opt for a 3100? :bang:

What do you shoot, do you have a firm budget, do you have any lenses in mind that you wish to incorporate in the budget...?

Budeget and intentions would be useful.
The 3100 has no in body motor so if the relatives lenses are not AF-S tehy will manual focus only.

I want to shoot everything! Mainly family, indoors quite a bit i guess. I love buildings too and landscapes. I have an active 5 year old daughter too!

Not sure on budget (musn't let the wife know)

Seen and handled a few Nikons and like them all!!

If i have to buy a lens i don't mind. I think the Nikon lenses my relative has for me are old ones. Not had a chance to see them yet as very busy at home.

definitely go for D90. D3000 is a beginner 's camera and D90 is not that much dearer. I think the kit lens come with d90 18-105 is good enough for every day use as well.

I faced a similar choice a few months ago (except I was completely new to DSLRs) and went with the D80 in the end. It's a brilliant camera and I'm really happy with it so far.

As others have said, the D3000 is an entry-level camera and probably not worth bothering with. I've heard great things about the D90 though and it's certainly got lots of extra nice features over the D80, so it's worth considering if you can afford it.

Might be worth noting that the D80/90 has a very different feel to the D3000, so I'd recommend handling both just to make sure you're happy with your final choice.

Ok, fair enough. Cheers

D80 or D90 it is then!! Will probably try and fine a 2nd hand one. Are there big differences between the 2? I know i could google a list of differences but would be great if the experts on here could lay it down in laymans terms for me.

The D80 is an old, old camera now. That's not to say it won't produce decent images, but if you are planning to shoot at much above iso 400 then you'd be far better going for either a D90 or if the wife budget allows, a D300.

D300 is way above budget.

Didn't realise the D80 had such a low ISO

I would recommend the D90, the low light performance is pretty decent, it can be pushed up to ISO 6400 (which I have done on a few occasions), it has an in-body motor that allows for older AF lenses to be used, I think the sensor is newer than the D80, not sure on that one though
It has video too

:)

The D80 has the same sensor as the D200, the D90 shares its with the D300. I'm sure someone will come along and say that they've had noise-free images at 1600 iso from a D80, but I've had both D80 and the D200 and neither could hold a candle to the D300 when it came to low-light shooting.

Mind you iso-wise the D300 can't compare to a D700 and I'm sure that probably gets trounced by a D3s, so.....

it's always the way  as I said the D90 can be pushed, IMO at ISO 6400 the noise in colour is terrible, but it creates some epic black and whites.

this one example of ISO 6400

I reackon the D90/D300 is very usable up to 1600. After that you need to expose to the right and use decent nr software.

Go with the d90... Used to have one and loved it. They are excellent little cameras. D3000/3100 are child's play in comparison. Bite the bullet early on and you will save yourself money in the long run..

Like others have said, the 18-105 kit lens will do the job just fine. Stick a 50mm 1.8 and you will be in love with it!! (Until you play with a 50mm 1.4) lol

Go for D90 mate and you won't be regret. Is good camera and is offer more than the D3100 you looking at. Brand new with the kit lens had drop price at the moment but if brand new is out of your budget, you can consider looking at used. They go for around £400 used average.

Check out: http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

they got tons of D90 second hand to sell.
