What do you want to take pics of?

People are willing to help, but you will need to provide a bit more information:

1) What do you want to shoot: Portraits/Landscapes/Wildlife/Motorsport/Macro/etc.
2) What SLR experience do you have - are you just starting out on SLR photography, or are you experienced in items such as DOF, Aperture, Exposure control, etc.
3) Why are you insistent on Canon - do you know/like the control set-up? Have you tried Nikon [I'm sure some fool will suggest it... :naughty:]?
4) How many lenses do you want/need? Are you after just a general walkabout lens (e.g. 18-55-ish) or do you want extra zoom on the walkabout (e.g. 28-135) or are you after a large range (e.g. 28-200mm) lens? Alternatively are you after 2 lenses (one 17-70 ish, and one 70-300 ish)? This answer may come from the answer to question 1.
5) Have you actually gone into a camera shop to hold any of these cameras? I know people who have switched to nikon purely because they prefer the weight/feel, and equally people who have splashed out on an expensive canon purely because they prefer the larger grip size that the high-priced canon bodies have.

Hopefully if you can answer some of these questions, you will get a lot more useful advice on what you want/need.

Thanks.
1. Landscape and macro
2. I haven't got any DSLR yet. But sometimes used my friends DSLR.
3. I haven't any idea about setup of canon or nikon. I am looking for which will be better for me. One of my friend have been using Pentax K20D. He told me this one is better for me. I am confused honestly.
4. I need one lens 18-55 IS.
5. In several times, i went to Jessops and checked Canon 500D. I am happy about its weight and option. I also checked Pentax K20D. It was better than Canon. But my question is which camera's picture output quality is best.

Kind Regards,
Mizan

It's not as clear cut as which camera has the best image quality. There are too many factors involved to say one camera has better image quality than another. If you liked the Pentax K20D, get the Pentax K20D and a good lens.

If you're not after top-end range, then I can recommend Canon's budget range (e.g. 500D) - if you really want to spend all you've got, then I'd probably recommend splashing out on the lens - this is the easiest way of upping the quality of your photos.

I fairly recently bought the sigma 17-70mm lens which I'm dead pleased with, and offers a really good, cheapish (~£250) option for macro photography, as well as being a decent walk-about lens. I see you quite like portrait photography as well (from flickr!), and for this, I cannot recommend a nifty-fifty (prime 50mm f1.8, ~£75) highly enough.

If you really want to spend the money, splash out on the canon L-glass for your lenses - you will never regret it, as long as you pick the right lens for your photography - the quality is exceptional.

If you do stick with the kit lens, the canon 18-55 IS that comes bundled is, by all accounts, a pretty good kit lens, but I don't know if it has much in the way of macro capability, so you will probably still want to splash out on a macro lens as well.

This is just my 2p, and I am not one of the experts here!

As regards to the canon v pentax i doubt there will be a great deal of difference in the actual image quality (Yes there will be slight differences in the white balances and colours but this can all be rendered mute in processing) if its your first DSLR you might not want to go with one of the higher end cameras as yes they do give you a greater degree of control but this can also be a problem, as if you dont know how to use the modes etc you wont get the results you want.

I shoot nikon so i cannot comment on the canon or other brands in terms of the entry level DSLRs but the nikon ones such as the d60 have software developed for first timers, for example with the 60 if the subject you are trying to shoot is to dark or to light with your current settings it will actually tell you SUBJECT IS TO DARK/LIGHT on the LCD screen

For £1k, I would get a Canon 40D with 17-85 IS lens, great walkabout, plus 55-250 IS. Or 50D if you can push to it. For macro, a pukka macro lens is nice but they are expensive, and some thing like a Canon 500D close up lens (not to be confused with the camera of similar name) is far cheaper and really pretty damn good, or a Raynox 150 or even 250 depending how close you want to go.

To save some cash, perm any of these options, or substitute the 18-55 IS lens.

Thanks everyone to give me a little time. I am going to buy Canon 500D soon. One more question could anybody tell me about short photography course in London? I need a short course on photography from an institution.

Nothing wrong with the 500D :) Have you tried a 40D or 50D? They handle quite differently to the 500D; I like them both, you choose. The way they feel in your hands is probably the biggest diffence between cameras these days, there aren't any rubbish ones.

If you google photographic courses, there are loads.

Thanks. I heard that, canon 40D have some complaints about shutter problem, battery down etc. from some of canon user. They also recommend me never buy 40D. so, you tell me what can i do. In google should i search photographic courses?

Buy a d200 off here, around £475.
Then get a 50 1.8 afd, up to £85, check the forum again.
While you're at it look for a tamron 17-50 2.8 @ a couple hundred.
Then with the change buy a nikon sb600. And see if you can get a bag to put it in.

Sorted.

I've not heard of any problems with the 40D. Mine is just fine :) There's one in the For Sale section with 17-85 IS lens that is maybe worth a haggle.

Have a look here for courses in London. http://www.arts.ac.uk/ Many years ago I went to the London College of Communication which is very good. I would love to go back there.

I'm not sure how much advice you will get about courses on here. Maybe you could pick out a few that appeal to you, and ask for people's opinions and experience.

Immediate questions I would want to know are full time/part time/on line, how long for, starting when, what do you want to achieve, and what do you want to do when you've finished?

Good luck :)

Even I did!! But one of my friend (who is NOT a member) but somehow read that thread, advised me to direct MIZAN there!!

Such traitor!!

That thing helped me big time selecting my camera ... Thanks to RobertP once again!!

nowt wrong with 40d cameras, I would recomend a 40d/50d with kit and an entry level tele like 55-250 for your budget.

If you go secondhand you won't lose anything as the bodies and lenses are very well built, but will have more money to spend on other bits. e.g diopters for macro stuff or a 70-300 IS which has a very good rep.
