Just after some pointers as to what i should be looking for, i have a small budget £200 to buy a camera and 1:1 macro lens, appreciate it will probably be 2nd hand.

Could someone help with a body and spec of lens please as i am struggling to understand what i am looking for!

If poss i'd like a compact body but price is the most important,

maybe a nex6 or nex5r, those have focus peaking which is handy for macro, as you often manual focus :)
same with alpha line.
might want to check the camera has a depth of field preview button too

you should try the various makes of camera for how you get on with them, you can get the tamron for every camera anyways :)

.....Get a Nikon D70 for £75 ish . Job done.

I think a body with Liveview would be a better option for somebody who's not experienced with macro photography.

After more research I am considering a Canon EOS 1100d, it is a beginners DSLR and on budget. Open to suggestions for a macro lens now.

So I take it that you've upped your budget a little then? If macro is your sole interest then picking canon makes a lot of sense in that at some point you might go for the frankly legendary MP-E65  but for now the above mentioned Tamron or a sigma 105 macro might be a good avenue for you to go maybe with a cheap flash gun too

I am willing to consider paying abit more as I am realising I wont get what I want for £200. I dont want to waste my £200! I'd rather wait and spend abit more.

I can get the 1100d body for £200 ish, hopefully i can get a macro lens for £100, if i bide my time on ebay. Just need to know what lenses to bid on. I get the impression i must have 1:1

1:1 or greater is a true macro I believe it's not an area I can claim to have vast experience ;) you can get some great results even on a budget as an example while not easy I have in the past used a cheap 50/1.8 and manual extension tubes to get some decent results for at little as £65 on the used market

I'll grant you it took a lot of practice but it is possible :)

1.1 is huge magnifcation, older macro lenses where 1.2, or half, which is fine for most stuff
