I am looking to replace my 17-40 L for a walkabout lens with most use being in the wide to mid range of the focal length. I will be using it with a Canon 5D MkIII..

Option A
Canon 24-105 MkII OR Sigma 24-105 Art – most reviews I have seen favour the Sigma for sharpness, especially at the wide end. Anyone used both?

Option B

As I already have a Canon 70-200/4 L IS
would it make sense to go for a Canon 24-70/4 IS instead of a 24-105 ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

On FF, I use a 24-120 f/4 as my walkaround, sacrificing the extra stop of lens speed/DoF for the versatility of the extra 50mm over a 24-70 f/2.8. Being a Nikon (and Fuji) user, I can't comment on Canon options.

If you are only wanting to use one lens for as much as possible then id go for the 24-105MKII. ive never used it, but i like the focal length.

My personal walk around kit if 5D4 with 24-70 f/4 (sometimes f/2.8mkii) and 70-300L. When i have the 24-70 on i sometimes wish i had a bit longer, without having to change lenses, but these two cover almost everything i need, plus i have macro.
If it wasn't for wanting macro i would have gone for the 24-105MKII though.

Im not sure what you mean by 70-200/4 MKII though. Is that a Sigma lens?

I've got the 24-105 Canon, great kens, constant f4. The extra range over the 24-70 works for me and it's a 1/3rd lighter
Can't comment on the sigma

Its the Canon 70-200/4 IS MkII Dave.
EDIT the 70/200/4 L IS (I forgot my previous 70-200/4 did not have IS - another senior moment LOL.

Over the 24-70 f/4?
24-70 f2.8 IS is often the lens others use as a walkabout - sorry missed the f4.

In which case - I'd say the 24-105f4 all the time, so just need to work out Canon or Sigma. The 5Dmk3 came with the canon lens as it's kit lens.

Thanks for all the feedback this far - its looking like a 24-105 is favourite, just need to work out whether to go for a Canon MkII or the Sigma 24-105 Art

FWIW

I have the MK1 version of the 24-105mm

I originally used on my 7D and now (for some time) my 5D3, superb lens, sharp & versatile.

Ah, that makes sense. I had the non IS version....for 3 hours before I took it back and got my second IS version. Just can’t do without IS on a lens like this.

When I bought my 70-200/4 there was not an IS version Dave so no such choice - it was still a very nice lens though. I have had the IS version for about 6 years now.

Been doing a lot of research re Canon 24-105 IS MkII v Sigma 24-105 OS Art and just about every review I have found find that the Sigma is the sharper lens (especially at 24- 70mm (ish) although a few say it is too close to call.
What I find strange is the enormous price difference between these two lenses, In the UK (non grey) dealers Cheapest for the Canon is £1020 whereas the Sigma is widely available at £599 !!!!!!. I know the Canon has weather sealing etc and I am also very familiar with the Canon 'L' quality but why the big difference in price - am I missing something here?
BTW there is a big savings to be made on the Canon via 'grey market' dealers whereas the Sigma price is fairly much the same where ever you buy it from.

I wonder just how Canon can improve on the IS version. I cant imagine it will be a huge leap as the 70-200 f/4 IS is already near the top.

Were the comparisons done against the Canon Mk2 as the Sigmas came out in 2013/2014 and the canon Mk2 in 2016.

For the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM £599 lens, why have they dropped the /A designation, is this not the art lens anymore or lazy websites? Looks like the price has dropped by £200 recently, a new version coming out?

Sigma give you a usb port on the new lenses for firmware updates. Canon lens is waterproof. Interesting choice

Yes a lot of the reviews were against the Canon 24-105 IS MkII. Re the Sigma 24-105 f4 OS it is the Art lens but some web sites do not describe it as so and other just put an 'A' instead of 'Art' - lazy websites as you say.
I have only just started looking at the lenses so did not know the Sigma price has dropped by £200 recently - maybe there is a new version coming out. I already have the Sigma USB port. Not fussed about the water proofing as I always carry a back pack and/or a water proof camera and lens cover in case it rains.
BTW there are a few old non OS versions of the sigma 24-105 around but they are much cheaper still.
