walkabout/portrait lens choice

I would like to get a new lens for general/walkabout and to double up for a bit of beginner studio portrait work which i'm going to have a go at in the new year. I would like a bit more on the top end of the zoom and don't mind losing a bit at the wide as I still have the kit lens for now until I get a canon 10-22 later on.

I can't afford L glass and to be honest I think it would be a bit of a waste for a newb like myself :)

Narrowed it down to these few but it's a hard decision as each have good and bad points looking at all the reviews.

Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8
Canon 17-85 IS
Canon 28-135 IS
 
Can't comment on the others but the Sigma 24-70 2.8 is an absolute cracker of a lens:thumbs:
 
I agree with eric the Sigma 24-70mm can give ya near L glass quality pics "IF" you get a good copy also with the added advantage of constant F2.8 so it a belter for low light shooting.
 
Can vouch for the Canon 28-135 IS lens, plenty of reach and added bonus of IS for low light stuff.

Cheers :) The only thing that's putting me off the Sigma is the variation in quality between lenses that read about.

Tamron 28-75 F2.8 is a brilliant lens. I keep that on most of the time for day to day stuff.
 
I got my lady a 28-135 IS for her walkabout on a 30D. Does the job at its price.....not L quality but perfectly acceptable.

The Sigma's are faster but haven't used one so can't offer an objective opinion.

Another vote for the Tamron here :)

And also a suggestion to consider buying used - then you can sell at little or no loss if you decide another change is in order.
 
Sigma 24-70 2.8 vote here too - cracker on the Nikon.

After much reading of reviews (brains farting now) and more important looking at loads of photo's, I think i'm going to go with the Tamron.
