Hi looking for recommendations for an upgrade to the 17 55 general lenses I have on my 7d mk2. Recently upgraded to a L70 200 and loving the quality and want something similar use it for everything from portraits to landscapes. Max spend 650 happy second user.

Thoughts?

Assuming you have the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS and want to stay with the AP-C camera and need / want to retain constant f2.8 then the answer is not a lot.
If you are happy not to have constant f2.8 then the Canon 15-85 is supposed to be very good but its f5.6 at the long end.
You could go to one of the Canon 24-70 or 105 L lenses but you will not have the same FOV as you have at the moment .
The 17-55 is effectively the AP-C equivalent of the 24-70 for FF

I do not think you can do better than what you have. I use a Canon 18-135 EFS lens but its not L series quality.

I've been using an EF-S 15-85mm for the last three years. So about 18-months on a 50D (which died in March last year) and since then on a 7DII and consider it to be a fine walkabout lens.

My other half just collected an 80D today and that came with the new Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Nano. Will get to try it properly later in the week, but I'm impressed so far.

This looks like an easy one. If it were me, I would go with either the 24-70 f2.8 L II or a 24-105 f4 L.

Like you I have a 70-200 and also a 7d Mk2. I have the first version of the 24-105 F4 myself (wonderful lens) but given the overlap in range with the 70-200 my preference would be for the 24-70. For me, at the time I bought my 24-105 as I couldn't justify the extra price on the 24-70mm. You might be able to get a 24-70 in you budget assuming you're ok with 2nd hand.

(get a 24-70..... I would!)

I wouldn't recommend a 24-70 on a cropped sensor body as a walk around lens. Starting at almost 40mm equivalent focal length is simply not wide enough.

And I would be surprised if a MK2 was in budget.

Could the OP please clarify if we are talking about the 17-55 f2.8 or the 18-55 3.5-5.6 as it makes a world of difference

Sorry guys yes a typo its the 18 55 I am currently using

If you want to stick with Canon either the 17-55 f2.8 IS or the 15-85 f3.5-5.6 , both are good, the 17-55 is reputed to be "L" quality but as L lenses are all EF it is not labelled as such.
It depends if you want a constant aperture or not, personally unless you need f2.8 ( which you have never had ) I would go for the 15-85 , it is within your budget and matches nicely with your 70-200

Those two are great lenses, but the OP has a cropped body and both of those lenses are designed as general lenses for FF cameras where 24mm is wide. It's not on a crop so IMO it's not a great walkabout option if the OP needs a wide end.

Then you want the 17-55 2.8.

It doesn't have an L badge but the IQ is better than many L lenses.
