Hi I am a keen walker who is just getting into digital SLR photography. I want to buy a lens which will cover most stuations when ut walking as I've found changing lens's on the hoof not ideal. suggestions?? Budget around £300
thanks
Bev

The Canon 24-105 is said to be a great "walkabout" lens, but it's twice your budget. Not sure if there is a similar range 3rd party unit, but in your position, that's probably what I'd look at.

the 24-105 is indeed a great lens but as a keen walker I'm not sure it would be wide enough for the inevitable landscape shots on a crop body.

I have Sigma 17-17 as a walk about on my 30D and find it to be very verstile for most subject matter, although you'll need something a lot longer for any sort of wild life work . It can be had well within your budget leavng you enough left over for a decent polariser or some money to put towards a longer zoom like the Sigma 70-300 for shooting little critters.

I have a 24-70 2.8 Sigma on my 40D and think its great! A snip a c.£280 (I got a mint SH version for £220)

Not quite the range of the aforementioned though!

If your walking do you think you may require slightly more at the short end? i.e 17/18mm?

*I type too slow RE; wide angle:bonk:*

Welcome Bev

I would suggest you consider the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, or perhaps the Canon 17-85mm? Not quite as fast as the others, but has image stabilisation built in.

The Tamron AFS 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 might suit your needs and can be found in your budget.

That Canon 17-85mm is your best bet within that budget, although I've always done ok with my old 18-55mm :)

Thanks everyone for helping me with this one, its great to have a forum to tap into as a new DSLR photographer

i'd also recommend the 24-105 as a wide range walkabout lens, it isn't quite wide enough for landscapes, but i have my 10-20 for that and i'm addicted to it, but if i had to choose for general shooting one lens then it'd be my 24-105, but it is quite expensive too.

When I used a 24-105 that I bought on here on behalf of a friend I thought it was a super lens and I got some (for me) lovely shots. If I was looking for a walkabout lens and had the pennies its the one I would go for.

I have a sigma 24-70 f/2.8

Me 3

Its a great lens

I used it to shoot a wedding on saturday just passed

the shots turned out great, however there was some occatiosn I could have done with having a 18-70.

but you can't have everything

I'd second that, cracking lens. I know it's not in your budget, but well worth it if you can stretch that far, or one to consider for the future...

Having tried the 24-105 I agree its a superb lens but for now out of my price range. I spied a 2nd hand sigma 17-70 f2.8 and having tried it went for that -it will keep me happy as I head for Peru this summer.
Thanks for all the really helpful suggestions
Bev
