Is anyone going to this? I'm thinking of going down to Cardiff Bay a few times (i live 1/2mile away). It seems they're doing a special stage over the barrage this year, which might make for some more interesting photos than in the stadium!

I hope to go down for Thursday and Friday, I have only done single days in the past and never made it in to Cardiff, the new bay thing looks good.

Do you have any ideas on how close the spectator areas will be for the Cardiff Bay run? Oh and i'm assuming it'll be poorly lit for that time for the 7pm running?!

May go to the Margum stage... unsure yet though, never been before, what is it like for things like light and positions to take photos?

I may be going to the Epynt stage with my familly.
Doubtful I'll have a zoom by then so 50mm will have to do... =/

Then again, I'm only going for my own enjoyment. Follow it on the TV but never been to one before :D

I think i will take my 100-300, 150 and 17-85, should cover enough bases there

does any body know if you have to stick to spectator areas or can you go off in to the wilds

Officially you should stick to the spectator areas

Unofficially people always wander off, just be sensible, don't get too close, don't stand on the outside of bends, watch for the plume of muck and stones that follow the cars etc. If you're causing a nuisance and being dangerous the marshalls can request the stage be cancelled, then you'll face the wrath of all the other rally fans who've wasted their time and money.

Never missed a Lombard/RAC/Rally GB from 1986 to 1999 but as the years passed, the event got smaller and smaller and shorter and shorter. You now get penned in too much for my liking.
It Used to be fun finding the stages and rushing around trying to get to the next one before the first cars came through.
I find it really disappointing now and don't bother any more. Shame really. :shake:

First time in a while I am not going. I decided to give it a miss this year. I tend to have more fun shooting the likes of the Trackrod, Roger Albert Clark or the Premier. Much closer to the action and its more friendly. Plus of course the WRC is a damn site more expensive.

Funny, I've been going to the Lombard / RAC / Network Q / Rally GB ever since I was little, I went to the Trackrod for the first time this year and my experience was exactly the opposite to yours, I found the spectator stages in Dalby dull, it wasn't much cheaper than Rally GB (£12.50 instead of £20) and didn't have the international appeal of Rally GB and I found I was much further from the action than on Rally GB.

You'd be surprised what you can do with 50mm on a rally. If you are safe and clever you can easily be close enough to stages to make that work extremely well!

I will be there, but will be working (with camera of course).
Also the Resolven stage would be your nearest stage, 20 miles of forest, it's an excellent stage. I am also on the stage setup team.

Are you accredited? They apparently only have 10 photographers from the UK Media. Crazy really for an event with such a large footprint on Wales....room for twice that!

ive got no intrest in spectator areas but would like to see the top cars . i think ill stick to the likes of the woodpecker ect to me rallying is as raw as motor sport gets and thats the way i like to spectate

i cannot make head nor tail out of the site, its really confusing, i want to know exactally where to go if i book the saturday i want to know where they pass through. Why is nothing simple any more.?

Sweetlamb on Friday and Dixies (Halfway stage) on the Saturday will both be excellent opportunities for photography. Sweetlamb has great views of the cars and jumps and watersplashes that are very easy to photograph. Dixies will offer 4 passes of the cars.

The Margam stage will run on the Sunday, confusion reigns as the shakedown in Margam is cancelled? Generally I'd advise for photography to do the shakedown as you get to see the cars a few times, but I have no desire to go to the Cardiff stage. Night time and spectator pens conspire to remove any enjoyment for me as a photographer. As a spectator it might be fun though.

I'm accredited for the event and supplying a number of regional newspapers for competitors. The main reason they only give a small number of UK media tabards is that there are very few UK competitors - Matt Wilson has his own media guys to supply pics who are FIA accredited and o the whole championship and competitors get copyright free images from the WRC's own photographers.

The National Press/Agencies get first refusal for their photographers but as regional press are less likely to print stories that don't affect their region then there is little value in giving out hundreds of press passes.

I'm lucky that I'm supplying Mid Wales and Herefordshire papers - proper rallying country!
