Hi All

I did search but maybe missed anything similar?

I have 1511 running but Win Updates is spasmodic with the last recorded check at 9:24pm on 12/12/16, I have noted three critical updates listed elsewhere that I have installed manually. However thought Wup checks the last checked date does not change from that noted!

I have in readiness my 1607 ISO file burned to DVD and have read some comments on other forum that a (forced) upgrade from 1511 to 1607 resolves the likes of stuck/unresponsive Wup in v 1511.

I would welcome your thoughts & insights about doing the this upgrade :)

FWIW on this page https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 I see this offered at the top

Update now
We noticed you are running Windows 10. If you would like to update to the latest version, click Update now.

Update now

So the website appears to analyse that I am running an older W10 version.................but Wup does not?

I'd suspect wup schedules updates, but the site just looks at what you're running and offers you the change on the spot.

Well, updated to 1607 though did take a few hours what with the pre finish "updates" to download

But 2 key (to me) features have changed:-
Unlike in 1511 where I could disable Cortana and revert to a standard search box that control is no longer available, though I do recall reading something about that?

Under 1511 there was a simple volume control in the taskbar = two clicks to mute/unmute, now the only way to do the same is open with one click to get the whole volume control 'set' and click the much smaller 'speaker'....yes two steps still but the default location for the panel is at the top lefthand corner i.e. diametricaly opposite to the taskbar. Under 1511 the simple controller opened just above the taskbar.

Heh ho, change not 100% for the good ;)

Unless folk know other ways to "control" these settings???

TIA :)

Edit ~ a boot later I now have the original 1511 volume controller in the taskbar :)

The other thing I have noticed is that whether a "Restart" or boot from "Shutdown" is slower to get to the desktop!

One other resource hog that runs at intervals is the "Microsoft Telemetry Compatibility" app(lication).

I have found some pages where they say is possible to turn this off by disabling it, has anyone done this???

not sure what you mean about the mute, the standard volume slider with mute is still there?

not sure what you mean about cortana either, just type in what you want and it'll search still.

regarding the telemetry, when you did the w10 install did you go for express settings by any chance?

Hi Neil

1) Re mute:- yes the button and slider appeared after two or three reboots :)

2) Re: Cortana - initially all I got was Cortana offering to help not the 'normal' search function. But like the mute it does now seem to be like the 1511 W10 version (NB though unlike 1511, the search box next to the Start still 'says' "Ask me anything" )

3) Re: Telemetry ~ when I installed v1511 there was as part of the 'setting up' the various "on or off" selections and I did indeed decline various ones including 'contact/feedback to MS' types.

However, installing v1607 I got no such steps to select these. I would have thought a bit like all my other preferences "it" would have honoured those settings! So does seem that it took over going into mothering mode ;)

3a) So other than delving into Services is there a user controlled area that I have yet to come across where I can 'turn off' those automagically set Express settings???

TIA :)

Have a look in All Settings/Privacy.

Have a look in All Settings/Privacy.

Thanks.

I already have turned off anything that looked too much like MS monitoring but cannot see anything that refers to telemetry service???

sounds like you can just disable the service, but it shouldn't be doing much at all. according to that article data packets are pretty tiny.

is it hogging cpu or memory?

edit - ah are we talking about CompatTelRunner.exe by any chance? that should be a one off thing where it scans all of the programs to check their compatibility (if I remember rightly). maybe just turn the pc on and leave it for 30 mins (turn off power saving). once it's complete it shouldn't need to run again afaik.

edit 2 - or you can force it to disable from Task Scheduler.

Expand Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Application Experience
Right click on any of the tasks listed as Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser and choose Disable.

Thanks for the link, will have a read later and the advice it offers :)

Re: Telemetry 'a hog ?' ~ bearing in mind I noticed it soon after the v1607 installation it was active for a good few minutes with a bit of disk thrashing, that is what brought it to my attention when I checked the Task Manager for processes running and it was taking up a good bit of CPU & Memory %'s. Perhaps it was an initial data gathering for the "report on the installation...." NB there were in Task Manager two iterations of it running at that time!

check edits above too :)

The apparently long run of the telemetry initially for the Compatibility sort of makes sense but as far as I can tell that has not repeated itself!

At the time I mentioned in Task Manager the processes running definitely called themselves Microsoft Telemetry, not CompatTelRunner.....though that I suppose might have been there as well?

Now disabled :)
