The Death Penalty, (Capital punishment if you like), will of course deter some

It will certainly not encourage people to murder so by logical implication by it's very nature it will deter some to kill

That argument could also be made for other forms of punishment too.

I reallly don't think this is the thread to defend or argue against the death penalty....I'm against it, but even I'm finding that stance hard here

Well, yes, always but sadly there is no limit to what man (I mean the species not the sex) will do and these days we're bombarded with news and these sad and sickening things come into our lives again and again... murder, rape, child abuse, hundreds going abroad to join IS... the saddening and sickening just keeps happening but one thing that we can do is try to retain a little humanity ourselves and refrain from committing acts of barbarity. Personally I think that the death penalty is an act of barbarity and I'd rather see the perpetrators of this terrible act deprived of their liberty, probably forever.

I hope that they receive very long sentences and that they either die in prison or display such regret and contrition and undergo such a radical rehabilitation that they can safely be released. But it's more likely that they'll get 12 years and be out In 6.

I really think the services have enough problems without making them part of the criminal justice system.

Or to misquote Russel Brand 'do you really think the problems in the middle east could be solved by heavily armed paedophiles?'

Yes it does! It won't stop all but it will deter some. As I see it, you have 3 factors in crime, motive, punishment and moral compass. They work together, i.e.:

You know theft is wrong and you don't agree, however you have no money and your child is crying through hunger (motive), you steal bread as you know your will get a slap on the wrist. However, if like most of us you are not skint, you would not steal at all, or, if you were skint but theft of a loaf resulted in a 10 year jail term you would probably not steal.

Same could be said for driving, most of us don't drink & drive as we could kill others (plus we would lose license, for many a job = lose house etc...). While some will still drink and drive if we reduced the punishment to say £10 fine we would see more cases. If it became a standard 15 year jail term it would get even lower. Many of us speed (choice or not paying attention) and will cope with 3 points and a £100 fine. But if doing 80mph say you get a 3 year jail term would you chance it?

So while not everyone will be deterred, the tougher the punishment the less likely to are to commit that crime.

I think that is what you want to be true. There is no evidence to support the notion that the murder rate falls when capital punishment is introduced or in place. Your examples all relate to people who are not unbalanced enough to consider murder. Some states, California is one, can also put people in prison to do their term and then place them in secure units if they are deemed unsafe. There are other ways. I agree that the death penalty is barbaric. Deprive them of Liberty forever, I say.

as this has turned into the usual TP blubbering ,heres another good idea ,again go back to the old ways ,send all our criminals off to australia ,preferably in one of them immigrant boats they won't let land

Yes, but California also has the death penalty as an option. They may not executed anyone since 2006, but they still have it.

Those who espouse the extreme opposite to capital punishment etc. cannot rant. They don't have the time.
Possibly they are too busy knitting scarves for the poor inmates, lest they become chilly in their rooms.

I was thinking more stoning for sexual crimes, or just dropping them from a car park (in this case the crime was being gay), beheadings etc
 
the first one is clearly mentally ill - offenders 2 and 3 want a bullet in the head
