VueScan or manufacturers drivers?

I have a Canon Canoscan 9000f scanner that I'd like to add to a Windows 10 pc. The good news appears to be that Canon does provide Windows 10 support. However having seen many references to VueScan I wondered if there was any advantage in using VueScan rather than the Canon drivers. Does any know if there are any advantages in using VueScan?

I have VueScan which I use for both my Canon flatbed scanner and my Nikon film scanner. I find it very convenient to use the same software for both devices. Recommended.

I can't be specific about the apps mentioned, but there are two possible comparison issues, so separate them out. One is the capability (scan control features) of the app in question (histogram, levels, curves, white & black points, bit depth, etc etc), and the other is the user interface itself and how commfortable you are with it.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that in some cases, if you loaded both scan apps, that their drivers could be in conflict. Just be ready for that kind of thing.

But you could try both, with a free trial version of Vuescan, and if you go on to buy it, it won't break the bank.

As droj says, it's worth trying both to see which you prefer. I'm assuming you have a disc with the Canon software, so probably eligible for a free update anyway. The Vuescan trial is worthwhile to compare results, but I seem to recall the Vuescan photos will have $ signs on them for the trial? It might be worth getting used to the Canon software first, since that would make it easier to compare with the Vuescan rather than trying both at once.

I've had Vuescan Pro for years and the big benefit is that you get free updates forever and it will work with loads of different scanners. I only recently tried the Epsonscan software that came with my V700 flatbed and was surprised to find some results were better than Vuescan, so definitely worth trying the Canon product.

Thanks for the replies. I was just trying to avoid testing if someone already had the answer.

Sirch, you suggested Silverfast - are there any particular benefits of using Silverfast?

It'sprobably personal preference, having tried both I found Silverfast far easier to use, especially for colour negs. Also with Silverfast you buy a version for your scanner (i.e. it only comes with a driver for your specific scanner) and if you change scanner or have more than one scanner you have to buy more drivers.

just don't mention it on here because when I say I prefer Silverfast I usual get told that I am wrong
