Hi all,

Purchased the above lens a couple of days ago, brand new, and I don't think the VR is working properly on it. On my 300mm PF, you can hear the VR activate when you half press the shutter and also hear it deactivate when releasing the shutter.

This new Nikon 24-70 though, doesn't seem to be activating at all, either when the switch is moved to "normal" or "active".

This is on my D500 and my D3S.

On my 300mm PF, the viewfinder stabilizes every single time that I half press the shutter whereas the 24-70 doesn't.

Do you think it could've been damaged in transit?

Is there anything I may have overlooked?

Also, I can get sharp images with my 300mm VR at 1/10 sec. No chance with this one.

Hopefully there is something I can try but the fact that I've tried it on both bodies seems to indicate it may be faulty?

Thanks,
Wez

istr there was also a menu option for vr, which might be overriding on one lens but not the other?

Sounds like a duffer to me, especially with the blurry photos compared to the 300.

Can you hear the VR motor working if you press an ear to the lens?

Yea I think it is. Just been testing it for the last 20 mins with no joy.

Well one thing that is happening, is that if I switch it to VR Normal and then turn the camera off and then back on again I can get one shot with the VR and then it doesn't continue to work. However, if I switch the camera off and then back on again, I can get that one shot. Obviously something's wrong with it though to have to keep doing this.

Maybe the stabilization method is sticking or something?

The 300mm I can hear clicking/working every time. Not the 24-70 though :(

***EDIT**

It *looks like I actually ordered the 24-70 2.8 "G" version with no VR, on all the paperwork and the invoice online. I think they've sent me this one by mistake??

If I returned it and they sent me out the "G" version, would I be worse off than keeping this one with the VR not working? I've read that this lens is better across the whole frame compared to the "G" version which lost sharpness in the corners. Maybe it's better to keep this one after all?

You said you can't get sharp pics with the lens as it is. I'd return it. As minnt says, the non-VR is a great lens and should deliver in focus sharp pics..

I'd send it back and see what they send you next. The older version is no slouch. I'd rather have a fully working non VR lens than a faulty VR one.

I'm thinking I might return it.

I am getting sharp pics, at normal speeds, just not hand-held VR-intended speeds like 1/10 or 1/15.

If you order the VR version and theyt send you the non VR, I just return it regardless the lens works or not.

It sounds like it's the other way around. Ordered the non-VR and received the VR, albeit a faulty one. I'm in the send it back camp too.
