Has anyone experienced a lens malfunctioning because they didn't turn the VR off before turning the camera off ?
(Or making sure the VR is off before turning the camera on).
The manuals all clearly state that this should be done to avoid a malfunction but I've never heard of it happening.

This is an experience that I will avoid as
I don't use VR. I did not either pay any
attention to this eventuality conséquently!

Never heard of that. In which manual did you read this?

Heard of it many times, tried to obey it but kept forgetting so in the end i gave up and ignore it.

With the aid of Google I see that some camera manuals say it should be done. I've looked at my D3300 manual and can't find anything.

I thought VR activates with a half press of the shutter button in which case don't press the shutter button when turning the camera off, or .........................?

I'd never heard of this before, I thought it was only recommended when changing lenses?

I think what they mean is VR deactivated and not switched off per se. If the camera is turned off while VR is active (on) the moving elements will not park. The result is they will rattle around in the lens with movement.

The VR switch position is more like the circuit breaker in your house... whether the lights are *on* or *off* is determined by activation with another switch (i.e. focus activation).

From what I've gleaned about this there is no need to switch off the VR before turning the camera off -
'VR will turn Off automatically (within a second) after you take your finger off the shutter release button, so there is no need to turn it off by using the switch on the lens. The VR switch on the lens can stay On all the time'.
and -
'If you turn the camera off with the VR not parked - you may hear a rattling from the lens (this is NOT a malfunction). Just turn the camera back on - half-press the shutter and then release. Wait a few seconds and then turn the camera off'.
BUT -
'Never remove the lens or the camera's battery while the image stabilizer is operating, you could damage the lens'.
