Been looking into setting up a VPN but, it's all greek to me.
Tried a couple of times but, without success.
Does anyone know of a step by step guide to how to do this?

A VPN that lets you browse the internet anonymously?

A VPN to remotely access your home network when you're away from home?

Preferably both, more importantly accessing home network, was aiming to try a free option for starters.
I'm using a Asus n66u router, on Windows 10.
I see 10 has a built in option but, no idea how to use that.

If you want a guide to all things to do with privacy and anonymity on the 'net then this is a GREAT guide:

Starts from very simple to totally complex systems and a lot of great explanations.

Yea, I followed that tutorial but, couldn't make it work, I'll give it another go tomorrow, cheers.

Your Asus router has the VPN server capability baked-in I believe.

If you are trying windows as a VPN server you will need to pass TCP port 1723 through your router firewall, as well as GRE

Well, I've tried the Windows 10 way and, through the router, both with no success.

I must admit though, when it comes to messing about with ports & such, I'm at a total loss.
