What compact EVIL camera are you waiting for and going to buy

When Sony introduced NEX-5 - I was thinking to buy one for myself, I got one from my friend and used it for a week but because of lack of good lenses I decided that it's not for me. I've been waiting for an EVIL camera from Nikon but it looks like it’s still not clear when its going to be released. I tried Leica M9 in a shop but I think that despite the fact that it has FX sensor and you can use all these wonderful prime Leica lenses it is way too overpriced.

So now I'm thinking that Fuji x100 can be a good compact camera for everyday use.
It’s interesting to see what is your opinion and I think by using Voting option we can all see what our preferences are.

What compact camera are you waiting for and going to buy:

Whats an EVIL camera?

Mines pretty evil, it certainly tempts me to buy suitable stuff to go with it, but I'm guessing you mean something else...

How about an Alpha mount adapter and then you'll be spoilt for choice of good lenses?

EVIL Camera = Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens.

While Fuji X100 is not a complete EVIL because it doesn't support interchangeable lenses I think its still somehow fits well in this category:)
 
GH1 is doing just fine, but the faster Panasonic get better sensor processing and some fast lenses the better.
 
I was looking forward to Nikon's EVIL camera, which was rumoured to be based on the Fuji X100 chassis but with an APS-C sensor and interchangeable lenses.

Turns out it's not and will have a tiny sensor, so they can keep it - I'm happy enough with the GF-1.
 
Not really fair on poor old Samsung to leave them off the list. Their NX10 is a cracking camera.
 
In Canon family, all bodies with 3 or more digits are evil.
 
Where's the "EVIL camera is a bell end name for it and if I'd known anyone on gods earth would refer to the NEX as such I'd never have bought one" option?
 
Also, what are we voting for here?
Cameras we want to buy, cameras we have bought, cameras we have tried and liked or cameras we are waiting for?
Actual cameras would be better than just a list of brand names too as some of the brands listed don't make this type of camera yet and some make several models.
 
Only really interested in what the G3 will have compared to my G1 when it comes out, Id be curious to see what Nikon are rumoured to coming up with to.
 
Pretty meaningless, without the "None" option.
 
I'm in the none camp when it comes to EVIL cameras, if I've not got my SLR I want something that will fit in my jeans pocket.
 
Olympus should be out with a Professional grade PEN in the not too distance future.

Think m43 E-5. So that's an environmentally sealed/weathersealed body, made from bombproof materials, lightning fast AF and great normal ISO range image quality.

I stopped looking at compacts when they no longer had 'real' viewfinders that you put your eye to - so when you say electronic viewfinder...?

I have a DSLR, a GF1, LX5 and a couple of genuine pocket cameras but to be honest the IQ quality of the pocket cameras lags behind the coat pocket sized LX5 and that too is blitzed by the coat pocket sized GF1.

I carry my GF1 in a coat pocket but even if you put a GF1 (or similar) in a camera bag (belt mountable or over the shoulder) it's still much smaller and lighter than a DSLR and there are times and situations when I just don't want the weight, bulk and "look at me" factor that a DSLR can have. These cameras are great IMVHO.
 
I have an evil camera, although I don't really consider it evil, it's more like a strong magnet.

It attracts other equipment to it like magic and just builds and builds on the storage space required to house it all. The evil part is in me, always wanting to find another little friend for it to chat to in the case or cupboard. If it were a child, it would grow out of all the additional 'toys' it has, but as a child at heart myself, I cannot deny it more and more toys to play with. I don't want the 'none' option, I have it already!

I like the idea of the compactness of these mirrorless cameras but you still have big lenses pointing out the front which just looks stupid.

The lenses are much smaller than the equivalent APS-C let alone full frame lenses.

When reading critisisms like this I do wonder if some people have actually seen let alone handled these cameras. :thinking::naughty:

I also like the X100, but it isn't really an EVIL camera, it has an optical viewfinder and fixed lens!

Having handled it at Focus though I just couldn't see a use for it, not really pocketable, so I'd need to take a bag with me, if I'm taking a bag I'm as well taking my SLR with a fast prime...

Perharps I should also try it before I buy it. It looks fine on photos but if its not really pocketable for everyday use than...:thinking:
 
It isn't massive, but as the lens doesn't retract it isn't really pocketable, it is also quite heavy (part of the attraction, it is well engineered!), for me anything bigger than an S95 is too big for a pocket camera.

yes I'm pretty sure - you are still dealing with an APS-C sensor in the case of the sony NEX and even a 4/3d sensor still requires a large lens.

Except the M43 lenses have a special design whereby they have a little catch allowing them to collapse down when not in use.

The Nex is one camera / range. If you want smaller rather than something to support a slightly dodgy argument :) go for a MFT. There are plenty of comparison shots that show how much smaller these cameras are than DSLR's, even with a lens. In fact my GF2 with 20mm is smaller than the similar concept film cameras I've had including Bessa R, Canonet Q17, Trip.

I bought a GF1 a 20mm, 14-45 and 45-200mm and only used the 20mm so it might have well been fixed. Even though I had the choice I still only used the 20mm.

I ordered the X100 after playing with it at focus (its lovely, a nice size and well made) and I can just carry it round my neck, no need for my man bag and dslr ;)

I don't see that as a bad thing.

Anyway, I'd wait to see what Nikon bring out. Leica's current digital offering is sadly too expensive. :p

But my M4/Hexar AF gives me full frame, an awesome lens and silent operation anyway. ;)
