So I barely show my face in these parts, but after 'accidentally' ;) playing with a Voigtlander Bessa R in my local camera shop today I need to know more about it! It was the first time ever using a rangefinder camera! So can anyone shed any light as most google results are for the later models R4A etc. Would love to know if it is decent, and most importantly how much I should be paying for what seemed like an excellent condition silver body with a Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron lens.
Thanks you for any pointers. :)

Looking at completed auctions the body seems to going for around 200-250. The lens 250 to 350. Although I can see one at a dealers for a black body and that lens for 450.

The camera is a solid, dependable and dare I say gorgeous bit of kit. The lens is superb, pin sharp, great colour rendition and again a thing of beauty. I'd say anything £450 and below is a good price.

I think the R has a partly plastic body and the Leica screw thread mount. From the R2 onwards the cameras are all metal and have the Leica M mount.

I've just sold my R3a and still own a R, the only Voiglander lens I've used has been the 15mm which was a fantastic wide angle lens.

I use my R with Russian Jupiter lenses and love the 50mm on it.

My R is one of the first cameras produced and the rangefinder is slightly askew, but it doesn't affect the picture quality and is part of the character, if you're paying top dollar make sure the rangefinder is all set up correctly.
