Yesterday a very helpful lady at EE technical support turned on wifi talking

be attached to it :(

Yep that's what she turned on for me, if you can't get a phone signal you can use your wifi or another wifi router you can connect to,
to make calls,t hat is a phone with the wifi symbol next to it, which is why I requested it to be turned on as we occasionaly lose signal round
here and always when I need to contact someone.
This symbol is on all the time when I have 4g data/wifi turned on or off

I would imagine though it will still have WiFi on and you may find your battery gets munched more.

You're mentioning 2 separate features, volte is voice over LTE, this means that the 4G carrier can do calls and texts without needing to drop to 3G or 2G to do so, the advantage of this is more of the 4G network is usable by a phone that is VoLTE capable.

WifiCalling is a built in feature on certain phones that allows your phone to treat a wifi point as if it was a network mast and give service via the internet. It's also known as VoWiFi. The big advantage here is that you can get service in places with no network signal but wifi coverage, like basements or heavily insulated buildings.

Neither attach to apps, they are system features that the phone will connect to automatically and use when available.

Thanks Dave, yes I know what wifi calling is, just wanted to know what the strange icon that appeared was ie. the vo LTE one (y)

EE have been a bit tardy with their low frequency LTE rollout (compared to Three), as I said though, you should see additional coverage especially in rural areas when compared to someone who doesn't have a VoLTE capable phone, their coverage will be bound by the higher frequency 2G/3G/4G network footprint as they would still need to drop down to 2G/3G for calls.

Low frequency means the signal can travel a lot further. It's why in the past o2 and Vodafone would allow calls in all sorts of out of the way places as their original 2G networks were built on low frequency spectrum.

I didn't know about the calling over 4g I wonder how this is setup on my note

I don't think any of the Notes are VoLTE compatible. It's still a mess for Android as only the most recent phones are compatible (and every maker seems to use different protocols meaning sometimes only certain firmware versions are compatible). Only the iPhone is universally compatible and the Pixel almost so.

This is the current list:

  • you purchased one of the below phone models:
  • Apple iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 or 7 Plus
  • Google Pixel, Pixel XL
  • Huawei P10, P10 Lite, P10 Plus, P8 Lite (2017)
  • BlackBerry Priv, Dtek 50
  • you purchased one of the below phone models directly from EE:
  • Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S7, S7 Edge, A3 (2017), A5 (2017)
  • Sony Xperia XA1, XZ, X, XA, X Compact, Z5, Z5 Premium and Z5 Compact
  • Microsoft Lumia 550, 650, 950, 950XL
  • HTC 10
  • LG G6, G5, G5 SE, X Cam, K8 (2017), K10 (2017)

Fair enough it is certainly an interesting thing for the future

The networks want everyone to be using volte so they will pressurise the makers to conform, 3G is an inherently wasteful technology compared to either 2G or 4G so they'd like to get rid of it and the only way is to get everyone onto 4G fully with a small sliver of 2G spectrum left for alarm boxes and the minority holding out with old phones. Vodafone, as an example is already well into its program of recycling all of its 2100MHz spectrum from 3G to 4G (leaving only some 900MHz for 3G use).

The fly in the ointment is the complete mess that is Android fragmentation with every manufacturer adding their own twist to the firmware meaning you need network specific firmware to use the features on that network.

I must admit I upgraded my old Note 2 just recently to a Note 4 for that reason that 3G seemed to be dying.
I also moved my missus from a Samsung S3 to a Wiley Fox Swift2 for 4G as well.

Defo a fan of moving these things forward.

All I want to see oddly now is DAB radio moved forward from the rubbish implementation we have in this country.

Actually @Dave1 that list isn't quite complete, I still use a Samsung S6 on sim only deal and it works fine

Has it only recently started working? Perhaps it's been enabled but they haven't updated the list on their website yet.

I see it wasn't 4G Calling compatible as recently as the end of last year.

Yep as per my original post, it appeared when I had wifi calling turned on by EE a couple of days ago
At the same time the phone upgraded to android 7 (nougat) whether that had anything to do with
it
