VM Superhub

Wireless seems to be basically broken if you accept any of the defaults or advice from VM!

I have returned it to 5ghz, chosen a static channel, turned off some other auto mode and picked one security method. Ipad stuck happily on to it. I did reset network settings on it as precaution.

Been ok for a couple of hours which is like forever in superhub time.

I was on the phone to VM today complaining about my SH. The WiFi is very unreliable even with the laptop in the same room - drops the signal at least once per hour. Using the laptop in the living room the signal is seriously degraded and speed drops off dramatically; so much so I bought an extender which has improved the situation no-end.

My desktop computer is hard-wired to the SH and it takes several minutes to establish a connection when powering up.

Having been through hoops with test after test for their (India based) support team they've arranged for a technician to bring me a new one on Saturday.

All-in-all, I'm less than impressed with the SH - which is only a few months old BTW and has never worked properly. The old SA modem we had before was rock solid for years but can't handle the higher speeds :(

I'd try the settings I used. I think letting it change its mind is what causes a lot of the problems. Fix to 5ghz, don't use the wireless compatibility mode, fix wireless channel and set to wpa2-psk(aes).

So far its been ok for me since I've done that.

Well VM enigneer came and fitted a new SH yesterday, as promised. He checked the system throughout the house and left scratching his head - hope he got splinters!

He tried pretty much everything both inside the house and all the way back to the street cabinet but it still drops the WiFi no matter what he/I did. Unfortunately can't go to 5GHz as the wife's Android tablet is 2.5GHz only.

After he left I went out and bought a repeater and we do at least have a good signal throughout the house now and the WiFi "appears" more stable. Only time will tell.

For all the trouble this SH is giving the speeds are stillfaster than my BT ADSL business line :) In VM's defence this is the first time we've had any problems with their service and we've been customers since the cable service started here as United Artists about a zillion years ago.

A test this morning shows:

I'm on a 30Mb service, BTW.

Speedtest results are also problematic now. Try it with the thinkbroadband site as well using google chrome. It seems to give more accurate results.

Try the above settings but using the 2.4ghz mode. There's also the greenfield thing to try switching on in the advanced wireless settings. That drops support for b & g wireless devices so if your android tablet isn't n that won't work either.

Using the settings srichards suggests (except 2.5Ghz not 5) I just tried again using the thinkbroadband test with this result.

Doesn't look significantly different to the one earlier this morning.

Maybe the range extender has done the job *** SWMBO hasn't complained once today :)

If it is stable then that's a start. Still seems a bit slow to me though especially if you did any of the speed tests while right near the router.
