I have an old, but very good condition Vivitar flashgun which is a dedicated unit for my old EOS 620. I'd like to use it as a back up to my standard flashgun on my 350D, and potentially a 40D which I hope to purchase in March.

The pin layout looks the same, 5 pins in a 1-2-2 configuration. Would it be safe to use ?

Cheers,
Steve

The trigger voltage may be too much for your DSLR - check here -> http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

Personally I wouldn't try anything that's not officially listed in the camera manual. I only ever use my SB-600 on-camera with my other two flashes via a cheapo wireless trigger. Don't want to toast my D200!

Personally I wouldn't chance it. If you can, just purchase either a 430 or 580EX with the money you're saving thanks to the Canon cashback. Just my opinion of course.

I already have a dedicated Sigma Flash which is fine, I was just looking for a 2nd unit. I think, when I purchase the 40D, I'll probably get a 580 as well.

I'll probably just keep the Vivitar as a slave.
