Hi all,

will be visiting near Durham / Newcastle, in a few weeks, so would be interested in members views on good family days out. I'll have access to a car, so no problem driving, 50 miles or so.

If there's also some good photography related places, for me, that would be good too.

Many thanks in advance.

Beamish is well worth the trip

Thanks Darren, I'll check that out.

I'm going up to Barnard castle and the Durham area this weekend, I came back here looking for tips but it seems nobody from the north east is on TP

Maybe it's so goid, they are all out shooting, so don't have time to respond :)

not a local so correct me if i am wrong, but pretty sure there is something like the national coal mining museum there.. where you get to go "down pit"

Beamish is good
Durham Cathedral is awesome, as is the river and bridges.
Newcastle is full of spots for photos, the bridges, sage, Baltic etc.
Northumberland coast is amazing!!!

Depends what the family likes doing?

Bowes is worth a visit if your near Barnard Castle

Push the boat out and go to Whitby
Or

Enjoyable week spent, taking the kids, around the North East. Could have done with longer but they had a great time. No photography time, but not complaining, as I enjoyed the break. Just need a rest now to get over all that relaxing :D

Quick summary of some of the places visited.

Beamish - great day out, except, you really need 2 days. If anyone is going, make sure you book your tickets online, as it will save you standing in line to purchase. The queue was massive and it was great to just waltz past and straight thru in 2 minutes
Adventure Valley - good day out for the kids with plenty to keep them occupied.
Blue Reef Aquarium - kids loved this, especially the feeding sessions.
Life Centre - plenty for inquisitive minds to deal with. 4D motion ride was excellent.
Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Seaham - lovely shorefronts and very well maintained. Be sure to visit Lickety Spilt, in Seaham, for deliciious ice cream.

Stayed in Vale Cottage, Sunniside, which was excellent. Really quiet, with everything you could want, to have a home from home. Owners were great and have thought of every wee detail, e.g. on arrival there was bread, milk, bacon, eggs, tea, coffee, etc. Also nice that they had fresh flowers and a chilled bottle of wine ready
