VISA outtage

Does this affect Debit card payments? Reason I ask is I used my debit card in Tesco this afternoon and there still isn't a pending payment showing on my bank account and it usually appears immediately. Also Giffgaff have messaged me to let me know they have been unable to take their payment.

I read somewhere that some chip and pin transactions are going through, they may be being processed “offline” if the retailer has a floor limit set(typically £50 for a supermarket). They will then be synced with your bank when back online.

Loads of complaints on my faceberk local ,people being charged 2 or 3 times usually at surprise surprise filling stations .

shops have a floor limit agreed with the processing company - Barclays is one of the main ones - the limit value is linked to the percentage the handling company charge. Anything below that will process straight away.

What makes me laugh is all these business that say they have lost trade, we have manual trading processes that allow us to take a card payment from any card with a raised number which visa debit cards have. We just use the old manual card machine that takes an impression of the card and send them off at the end of the week to the bank.

We had these when I was still working in retail. The problem is nobody knew how the worked :D

Our payment provider stopped accepting manual impressions around 5 years ago.

It affects only Visa. The news do not say if it is credit card or debit card, only that it affects Visa cards. It could mean that Visa credit cards and Visa debit cards are failing.

But otherwise, other cards like MasterCard is working fine.

Giffgaff made a second attempt to charge my card yesterday and this time it went through. The payment is now showing as pending , still no sign of the Tesco transaction though.

Yeah, ours was up and down like a promiscuous womans undergarments...

we used those old card machines (wimwams my work call them) the first time the normal kit went down, but the second time the company sent out instruction that we were to use cash only, no wimwams at all, so we did lose some trade, but entirely because of a decision at head office.

We tried to get cash out of an atm in Monmouth and it kept declining the cards. Serveral other people there had the same, I tried my Halifax visa and it worked fine, so seemed to be very intermittent.
Reports of people waiting up to 45 minutes to pass through the Severn bridge tolls as cards weren’t working. Don’t know why they didn’t just open the tolls for the day and let people through.

Ah! those old manual 'card imprinter' takers. One of the range of products I used to sell back in the late 1980's. Used to work for company that made the cards and all downstream equipment ~ another lifetime ago that seems like!

So cashless society is going well then. Full steam ahead!

Tolls are all about making people miserable.
