i have the specialist crime directorate virus. Last time i had this, i loaded in safe mode and did a system restore.

This time, i cannot load in any of the safe modes. The pc just restarts.
My xp disc does not have the repair install option. So i'm a bit stumped.

Can i buy a new hdd, install windows xp and then use the old hdd as a slave and access my files?

Thanks

kevin

Yes. that is one way.

The other way is to use a linux boot CD to start the computer then use a USB drive to copy all the stuff you want to keep, then once your data is safe format the hard drive and reinstall.

I used a Ubuntu disc from here when i did something similar for someone.

Things like this make you realise how important backups are :)

The worrying thing is this isn't the first time for you. I've never had a virus. What AV software do you use? Also.. drop XP... it's rubbish and has some pretty major security problems... and is just rubbish.

Set your mail client to receive in plain text.. that can stop all manner of nasties getting through from spam.

Never visit "warez" sites, and never visit porn sites.

PC Tools Internet Security or Bit defender both do good jobs and will stop most of the casual stuff you get from websites, and both have pretty decent day zero protection.

I'd do a USB install of Ubuntu and boot from that as above.

It's always a good idea to have at least 2 separate hard drives in your machine, one for the operating system and software, and one as storage of your files. That way if something takes out your C: drive your files are on a separate physical drive.

Also.. back up. I'm assuming you weren't backed up? If you were you could have just rolled back to an older back up when this happened.

Think seriously about a fast external hard drive and a copy of Acronis or something.
