I find the Virgin homepage a bit slow to load.

Anyone know how to block it loading at all after the "Connected to Virginmedia" message appears.

Choosing to have a blank home page in IE or firefox does not stop it.

Perhaps it is just part of the Virgin "experience".

How annoying.

Try a different Home Page. TP? Does that work?

If not, I'd be tempted to try a different browser. Did you use a Virgin set-up CD or DVD?

Download Safari, set the home page to TP or blank. Does this work?

I'm with Virgin media and have Google as my homepage,

For IE; goto tools/internet options/general and type in the page you want to have as your homepage and click apply

For Google chrome select the small spanner to the right of the address bar and click options and set your homepage from there.

Used a Virgin set up CD which has a modified IE with all the Virgin branding etc.
Since changed to Firefox and cannot get shot of the Virgin Home page.

I think there must be something in the software on the CD that is stopping an alternative home page being selected when using IE or Firefox.
I don't want to go back to IE.

Thanks folks.

Upgrade to IE8 and then go back to firefox if you wish

Is this cable or dialup? I don't remember using CD for years for setup.

Jim,

I have IE8.

Byker28i,

Broadband via normal landline. Had it 8 or 9 years. Still have the CD.

When you install windows, just leave network plugged in, all works as normal without installing anything. Works wonders

goto add/remove programs and uninstall IE8

Unfortunately not an option. Sometimes come up against websites that I buy from that only work with IE.

Don't know that it would actually help.
Firefox is my default browser and the Virginmedia home page opens in Firefox when I connect.

 I am on virgin media and using firefox and have google as home page. Are you sure you have changed your home page to something other than virgin media?

I had this two weeks ago on my mates PC and we upgraded IE to IE8 and it cured it so I would presume if you uninstall IE8 and reinstall it it will sort your problem, takes about 15 mins.

The fact that you can do that deepens the mystery.

In Firefox my setting is:-

Tools
Options
Main tab - When Firefox starts "Show a blank page".

This has got to be related to the Virgin software I used to set up my broadband connection. It must be overriding the start page controls.

Don't waste any more time on it folks.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry been working

IE initial Homepage stuff is stored in c:\windows\system32\homepage.inf

I'm guessing your virgin media install changed this file and it might be read only so changes won't affect it?

The location of the homepage.inf is stored in:
HKey_Current_User \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main \ FirstHomePage

Start page is defined in: HKey_Current_User \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main \ Start Page

In Firefox, what happens with the homepage when you select Tools, Options, General, restore to default.

Had a look - no mention of Virgin in it.

That string stops at Internet Explorer on my PC (WXP)

It puts in a URL for a Mozilla page, but does not stop the Virgin page loading when I connect to the internet.
If I close down the opening Virgin page and start Firefox it will go to the selected homepage, but the aim was to kill the Virgin homepage.
Stuck with it I think.

Are you using a USB or stand alone router?

The page could be related to the USB 'dial up'?

Uninstall the Virgin media crap from the control panel. You don't ever need to install any of that tosh - just plug in and go!

EDIT: Just seen you're using a speedtouch modem. In that case, all you should need is the speedtouch utilities off the CD.

Speedtouch broadband modem into a USB skt.

That's probably where your problem lies.

TBH I'd bin the modem completely and buy a reasonable ADSL router from Maplin or PC world, which you could pick up for £25ish.

A couple of caveats:

You PC needs to have a network card installed (which most modern ones should do).
You will need to have your ADSL Login and Password available when you set it up.

Modern ADSL is designed to have an 'always on' modem running the connection, and USB driven ones are a bit outdated nowadays. You might also find that having a USB modem may well be throttling your download speed because IIRC they are limited to 2Mbps (some are 512 Kbps).
