I have just purchased a S8100fd. I normally use a vintage Halina 35mm. I am trying to decide which one is better. Film or Digital.

I know with Digital you can see pictures there and then, but with film photography it's about the excitement of the unexpected.

Any opinions??

Neither is better, they're both good. It's a futile debate that's been raging for years. They're each good for different things. Many ex film, now digital users do not lament the passing of film, many film users won't touch digital. Some people like me, and quite a few others on here shoot both.
 
I may just shoot with both. Film is great as it is just pointing and click shutter. With a few minor adjustments. Digital is simple, kind of.
 
For me, digital is better. I have tried film and love the cameras and the experience but I am simply not good enough at taking photos at this point (or rather I am at a stage where I like to take photos of all and everything and see how they worked out)
I don't really have issues with exposure of focus, it is more about composition and subject.

I go out for a few hours and take 1-200 shots usually and rarely more than 1 of the same thing. If I was use film I wouldn't do any of that and would take years longer to get anywhere.
 
Mainly digtal here,as those i still have my film cameras 35mm,sold the large format 6x7.

And sometimes will shoot the odd film :)
 
Great opinions. I suppose with digital you can take hundreds to thousands of pictures and keep them stored on Memory cards. Whereas you can't with film.

You can scan in the negatives and then keep them on memory.

I am basically a film photographer, but I recently discovered digital. I love both. They appeal to different parts of my brain. I often alternate between the two and if I get trigger happy with digital I shoot with a film camera for a while.

My take on the digital analog debate is that photographers need to shoot what they feel most comfortable with, getting great images is the goal, the journey to that goal wil be a very personal one.
 
Jao, I know what you mean.

Film and digital photography are superb in there own unique way. I prefer film photography as I can pick up quality cameras etc from CarBoot sales. Which are generally cheap. Where as digital cameras cost a few bob
 
Personally for me I much prefer film but this is only because :

1. I prefer landscape photography and like larger formats for this
2. I think I am now o.k in terms of understanding what an o.k photo should look like and also exposure etc which I only got from using digital extensively first. I would never have used film if I had not used digital first.

For other types of photography sports etc digital would seem to me to be far better, so it's not really which is better overall, but which is better for a particular purpose.

I thought this argument had died! I use film 6x9 and5x4 for landscape and digi when diving as fish will not pose!

Yeah that's true Dave.

Film photography is still going.
A lot of my photos are film.
Some of which I haven't yet took off the original film

I've took some pretty decent digital pictures. So now I've just gotta transfer to Flikr etc etc
