Vintage Lenses

Wow! Thinking of selling my Asahi Pentax Macro-Takumar 1:1 50mm f/4 and possibly trimming down some of my other lenses. Probably regret it later on.

HAHAHA! Brilliant idea. I just added that 14-30mm I was threatening. Amazon just published a new summer deal on it so I pulled the trigger. May be sleeping on the sofa tonight.. :ROFLMAO:

If I mention any lenses Mrs WW offers to buy them for me. That can't/wont last :D

I'm selling a few things at the moment so looks like I partially got away with it. :$ :exit:

Your wife buying them for you is making me feel slightly sick with jealousy, tho.. :D

Don't worry. I wouldn't let her. But, thinking about it what's the difference really as what's mine is hers/hers is mine etc.

I've just bought the Tamron to Fuji X adaptor. The only draw back I can see is that you have to put the adaptall back on in order to cap the rear element. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible. :D
is that the one that means you dont have the adaptall part fitted to the lens? Are you achieiving the full aperture range on the lens? My current adaptall and adaptor combination wont allow the smaller apertures so was going to try this one

This is true. We just have a bit of banter but I can't ever remember her encouraging me to buy something. Probably because I rarely need encouragement.. :D

Yes, it is. Mine was from K&F. Fits fine and seems to work. Although I haven't tried it out yet. I'm surprised you've had problems with your adaptall mount though. You've probably thought of this, but are you sure you have it mounted properly and the apertures align? Failing that if it's a zoom you're using it may have a variable aperture anyway, according to it's range.

Any of you ever used any version of the old Nikon 180mm 2.8? There's 3 or 4[?] versions but I would be looking at the cheaper end, I think the older non ED. Just curious .... this search began with looking at the 70-210 variable, which led to the F4 version on to the 80-200 F4 then the 2.8 and here I am :ROFLMAO: also looked at the 200F4 AIS [which is the one led me to the 180, everywhere I looked it was recommended over the 200F4 but of course it's at least double the price]

The only thing putting me off is the CFD, you wouldn't expect it to be great for a long prime, but I kinda want it all! I'm also considering the older 80-200 2.8 which I've owned before. I don't imagine that one would be considered 'vintage' but the older 180mm certainly would be, it's MF only and was released first in the 70's at least the one I'd be looking at, or the 2nd version which hails from the early 80's.

I think you'll find the increase is to do with the added costs of suppling the UK now we've left the EU. Suppliers now have to charge VAT on behalf of HMRC & have to be registered for this....
At work I've found may items are simply no longer available as the manufacturer is not willing to jump through all the loops the UK insists on. Other items like calibration standards that we can still get are now taking a month or more to arrive when they used to be next day.

I buy my adaptors from SRB, paying about £25 for each one. It may be a bit more than buying them from Fleabay, but they have all been of good quality and in the event of a problem I'm dealing with a long established UK company.

As for the cost of an adaptor, once bought, the buying of additional lenses with the same mount spreads the cost of the adaptor over a greater number of lenses.

Sure, and they hold most of their value if you do sell on, just kinda irritating that I could buy the very same adapters 2 years back for £5-10. I also gave away a bunch of them with lenses when selling. I'm still undecided what I actually want either way :D I think a lot of the fun of vintage/MF lenses is in the hunt. I am interested in the Nikon 180mm, the ED version, but it's a bit more than I'd like to spend on a specific MF lens, not sure if I'll get the best use out of it

I bought a Nikkor 180 ED Ais lens when I had my D700 and used it a lot for portraits as well as some general work. Bit of a weight, but the results made it worthwhile. I also had the 105 f1.8 for quite a time, it gave a lovely look to headshots at f1.8 and f2.8. I replaced it with the 105 f2 DC which was in an entirely different league.

From what I've seen and read on the 180mm it is certainly a very nice lens, have seen samples wide open that were pin sharp, has really nice bokeh too [to my eyes at least, it's rarely of high importance so long as it's not distracting] - I'd like to try it for close wildlife also, birds in the garden, swans/herons/ducks etc down the river, don't need anything too long - 400 would be sweet but I can work with 180/200 as I do like to include the environment rather than trying to get bird portraits

I was all set to grab one from ebay that is going for €200 but then I started to research the various versions and that one does not have ED elements, which leads to more CA and lesser sharpness. Supposed to still be a decent lens but after reading up on later versions I changed my mind on the older one, but, this means anything up to double the price and I hadn't planned to spend that much. I might yet, will ponder on it some more.

Just a few Takumar 28mm f3.5 pictures.

I don't know what these are, I'll ask Mrs WW. This one is a crop, maybe 50%.

I asked... They're pak choi.

It's a nice lens but the Novoflex adapter doesn't line the centre up exactly right, it's the same with my 50mm. It's beginning to annoy me but I suppose it's too late to send it back.

I bought a Takumar 35mm f3.5 to go with my 28mm f3.5 and 50mm f1.4. It seems to be a nice lens.

The weather wasn't great, dull, flat light and of course raining.

Just got my Nikon 35mm f2.5 Series E back from a clean and lubrication and it's working well. I hadn't used this lens much because it squeaked, now cured, but it seems to be a very nice lens. It's relatively small and light, sharp enough wide open, the bokeh looks ok and it focuses usefully close.

Looking at what they've sold for on evil bay recently the prices seem to have gone up since I got mine but if anyone spots a bargain I think it's worth a try. As with the 28mm f2.8 MK 2 I have there's a black plastic 35mm f2.5 MK1 and a MK2 version with a silver ring which IMO is better looking, the MK2's are more expensive though.

More Takumar 35mm f3.5 talk...

I like this lens. It's considerably smaller than both the 28mm f3.5 and 50mm f1.4 I have. One issue is the f3.5 but that's ok for good light and even quite low light with todays higher ISO capabilities, another issue is the close focusing distance isn't great and is considerably longer than other 35mm lenses I have but you can mitigate this to some degree with a close focus filter.

Anyway. It's a well made compact lens and a joy to use.

Proud and happy to be Just walking in the rain, getting soaking wet but not at all tortured or blue.

Yes. I've just ordered a close up filter for my Jupiter 3 as the minimum focus is 1m.

I'm just awaiting delivery of a Nikon 80-200mm f/4.5 AI and a TC-14B teleconverter.

I have a set of cheap Kood ones I've had for decades. They are 67mm so I have step up rings in various sizes too. I normally just take the No.4 with me. I think they work best with 28/35mm lenses and 50mm at a pinch as with longer ones the range of movement and framing isn't as great but if you want to fill the frame more that could be a good thing.

Ahh OK. I have this set coming. They'll be useful as my 3 Leica M-Rokkors and most of my vintage Russian lenses are 40.5mm.

Very Nice :D

This looks like the set I have but mine were under £30, but that was quite some time ago when I had a Canon 20D or maybe even 300D.

I could take the box I suppose but I just take the No.4.

Actually I'm amazed you can still buy that set I have as I got mine a long time ago.

Ah, sorry... getting my T's confused, mine's a Tokina 17mm f3.5 :D
Tokina lenses are generally very nice indeed but sadly don't offer interchangeable mounts. :coat:

I'm glad I accidentally made a good choice... as I just bought on spec and price :D

It's another lens that (looking at evil bay) seems to have shot up in price since I bought mine.

My little family of Takumar lenses.

28mm f3.5, 35mm f3.5 and 50mm f1.4.

This just shows the power of this thread. I told myself I had all the lenses I wanted and then I come in here and end up with three more :D

Now then Vintage Gurus. I'm perplexed.

Just received this 35mm Soligor today. It's a minter. However, the aperture dial confuses me. You have your usual range of apertures, of course. But at the end of it the numbers are in green and reversed. Quite what this range means I'm not sure. You can't appear to access it in any way. Well, not that I know of anyway.

T4/TX lens? I think these were designed to be used with adapters which, when fitted, would limit you to one scale or the other, depending on which was normal for your mount:
Looks like you can access the other half of the scale if you remove the mount. Does it come off?
