I am awaiting the arrival of a Tamron 18-270 lens which has a 62mm filter thread. The only filter I use is a circular polariser, the one I have from my Nikon lens is 67mm, if I just get a 67-62 step down ring will this give me a vignetting problem, or should I buy a 62mm filter? I've tried selling or swapping but have had no success. Anyone know the answer?

Just a thought, the OP says it is a circ pol filter. Pol filters tend to be that much thicker than say a UV filter. So with only a 5 mm diameter difference is there a risk a tad of vignetting?

Some of the step down rings move the filter forward, and that combined with a thick filter may be enough to cause some vignetting. Best answer is try it and see, before you try it on something that matters!

But it moves the filter forward and therefore there's still a risk of vignetting. I've just had this with the Hitech formatt filter holder with integrated CPL. The filters holder is 82mm and my lens is 77mm and so need a 77-82mm step up ring and the extra width forward is enough to cause marked vignetting. However, hitech have recently brought out adapter rings of various sizes thus eliminating the need for a step up ring and it's solved the vignetting completely. It only moves the filter about 1.5mm towards the camera but it's made a marked difference.

They all move the filter forward... If the CPL is of a design thick enough to cause vignetting with a step down ring, that same filter would likely cause vignetting if it matches the lens diameter (buying another to match the lens wouldn't help). That's why they make thin CPL's for WA lenses... as you said, the only way to know for certain is to try it.

Using a 67mm filter on a lens with a 62mm filter mount requires a step up ring, not a step down ring. You seldom get vignetting problems when you use step up rings and a filter larger than the lens. The problems come when you use a filter smaller than the lens and then you do need a step down ring.

TBH it depends on the lens (especially how wide it is) and how thick the step up ring is.
