Views on Nikon 18-200vr

Have the kit lens for the D90 18-105VR, think it's OK

I had a 18-200 for my sony before but never used it as found it slow in AF especially in dull weather conditions like our grey winter days and in low light condition.

Having read mixed reviews, but good old uncle Ken rates this lens, 18-200VR any one else got any views on it?


Is there going to be any areas the 18-200vr performs less well than the 18-105vr or vice versa?
 
meant to say views on version 1, as i would look at used/ second hand
 
I've had mine for a year and loved it (on a D90 as well). Does a great job of covering a wide range. It'll obviously never be as sharp as other specialist lenses but I found it a really good alrounder and throughly enjoyed it (the VR really helps as well). Never had any problems with the AF to be fair.

I am actually going to be selling mine (probably to a friend) as I've bought a Siggy 24-70. I went through all my photo's and realised that around 85% of them were at 70mm or less so wanted something a bit sharper and able to let more light in, as I've found myself doing a few gigs lately.
 
I had an 18-200VR and was pleased enough with it, as I have a Sigma 150 and a Sigma 120-300 both of which are better at the longer end (and both 2.8) I decided to sell the 18-200 to a friend who does weddings and she is happy with it (I used the cash to part fund a 11-16 Tokina ;)). So if you can get a good second hand copy - go for it!
 
Have an 18-200VR alongside an 80-200 f/2.8; horses for courses and all that but the 18-200VR is certainly a very good all rounder. It was my weapon of choice (i.e. you have one chance to get the shots) for an aeroplane air-to-air shoot due limited space recently and it performed flawlessly
 
Mine has been used really when I go on holiday. Rather than take a bagfull of lenses, the 18-200 does for most circumstances.

It's obviously a compromise, but if you find a decent one, it's a lens worth having.
 
definately want one in my camera bag.

think will aim to get rid of the d90 kit lens and look out for one of these

I use one on my D300.This an example of the picture you can take with it.
A friend had just called me on my mobile when this plane flew over,so it was a very rushed shot with the phone in my hand.The OS was a big help with this one.
Sorry I don,t seem to be able to post the picture.Like one or two others have said it,s a mystery how to post photos on here.

A little logo turns up with a "?" in it when there is a mistake. You can usually find the image address from that and work from there.
It looks a little wide, I expect the mods will come and change them to links soon lol.

Also consider the Sigma 18-200mm HSM OS lens. It's almost the same as the Nikkor but quite a bit cheaper. Check it out...
 
had a quick play with the Mk2 version and seems very good, if the mk1 is similar.

quick play, but between 18-105 it was similar to the d90 kit lens. just like the idea of extra flexibility as a one lens outing, so will look into a used version.

are these prone to zoom creep or any other issues?
 
I had a Mk1 and yes it was prone to lens creep.

The range is indeed great, I found it too soft for my liking.

I have since moved to the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and Nikon 80-200 f2.8 combo for the same (almost) range and the IQ is in a different league. Obviously, with the disadvantages of two lenses and price.

The VR was useful, but not as pleasing as f2.8.
 
i still tend to getting another tamron 28-75 f2.8 as loved it on my sony

but for a one lens outing think the 18-200vr will be good and obviously better than the 18-105vr for range and doesn't seem to loose any IQ

was zoom creep alot or just a little movement?
 
I had one on my D40 and found it a great walkabout lens when on holiday or out and about when you just don't know what your shooting!

I've had an 18-200 for some time. Its not perfect by any means, but as a 'gereral purpose' lens its hard to beat. They do suffer from lens creap quite badly, and they have a pretty poor maximum appeture, but for the money, I think the performance is outstanding.
 
I was lucky in the sense that my lens creep was hardly there, would not creep at 18mm, but would slowly from around 70 onwards.

Never really found it an issue though as was always holding the lens.

what is quite badly to you on lens creep?

would it creep continuosly from 70mm or just move a little?
 
Would slowly creep all the way out, but only if you held it with the lens facing downwards, held at an angle it stayed put.
 
Its not like it just falls from 18-200. If someone didnt mention it or you hadn't read a review on it, it's probably something you may never notice. Its typical behavior of such superzooms though due to the weight of the glass. Tamron lenses do it too.

that's what i just wanted to check that it doesn't just fall from 18mm to 200mm
 
Held vertically, mine will creep from around 30mm straight to 120mm. Below and above that middle area it doesn't creep. When walking 18mm sometimes holds it, sometimes it lets go and it'll then extend all the way.
 
shame they didn't make it with a lock function like i had on my tamron

not a huge problem, but just as you have it over your shoulder/neck and wandering about last thing you want is it to creep/drop and hit something by accident per say
 
I've had one since it first came out and I love it. Even use it on the D700.

If you can only take one lens with you, it is perfect. People will say it is soft; bah! It's lovely and sharp and for the money a great lens.

where was this taken, i really like it each time i see it
 
Had mine for 2 years, as everyone is saying it is not perfect and Uncle Ken rates it very highly.
I use mine as a walkabout if I only want to carry 1 lens.
It is also lighter than say the 17-55 for hiking or for holidays.
Conclusion - a very good allrounder

i guess i won't be using it on a tripod at angle, but would be nice to lock somehow when walking about when it's not in the bag

I've just checked mine and tbh it only creeps when pointing it almost vertically downwards. I've never noticed it creep when walking about with it around my neck.
