Yes
I have a Mac mini acting as a server on my home network - it does not have lion server just mountain lion - but am happy to spend 13.99 if I have to.

Currently iTunes is running on it for wireless sync and device backups and also Sonos music source.

I want to be able to sit on my iPad and browse my photo library that is stored on the Mac mini - when showing friends or relatives etc. Either by network share or using iPhoto or something.

How?

I do, even if I have to use Logmein to get onto a proper computer.

God Inate this for typing but this ipad is greatforsharingphotos!

Is this difficult with apple?
It's straightforward enough to share a folder over home network on windows but loading time of larger files will depend on router speed so it's best to use resized images.
Why would they make it difficult to view something in a folder on another machine

You could set up an FTP server on your Mac that is configured to give access to a folder containing your photos. You could then use an app like FTPOnTheGo to access the files.

Not elegant and I'm sure their is a better way!

Apple do things Apples way. A Windows share is not the Apple way of doing things.

I have a feeling this is icloud / dropbox cloud business. All will go through the server, and you may need significant storage online.

As an ipad owner myself I can't stop thinking whether android tablet would be easier to setup for things like this.

I think I have worked it out....

Folder on Mac mini called photos, inside a bunch of other folders of various photos
Install plex server on the Mac mini
Point it to the photos folder
Install plex app on iPad
Run the app and browse the photos.

Not tried it yet but seems to do what I want

Plex does indeed do what I want - but the folders full of images need to be fairly low res (even with the mini and the homehub on a gigabit connection to the switch) to make them load quickly and swiping between them smooth.

Mac Mini has gone - so I am experimenting with something else.....

I use picasa to manage my photos and perform simple edits on the laptop - this has a 'sync to web' option available to turn on and off for each album folder.

If turned on this will sync to an equivalently named album folder on picasaweb of which I seem to have 15gb in my google account (shared with gmail it appears). I can configure the image res to 2048 on the long side which makes each image quite small in size.

Then I am using an app called picasa web albums to view them on the iDevice - the beauty of this is that it does caching - so you can set some or all albums to cache on the iPad - you can even control the size of the cache if limited in iDevice storage or just want to restrict it.

Alternatively I will try adding the folders in iTunes photo section - but then these will need to be syncd onto the iDevice manually.

I always thought you could do this with iPhoto? Or you could use dnla.

Don't use iPhoto so you may be able to.

In the absence of many posts here I assume nobody needs or wants to do this

Surely the iPad (or other tablet) is the best medium to pass round to family and friends for viewing photos.

I'm sure nobody prints them all off and puts them in an album anymore!

Portfolio pro downloads from Flickr or photo stream uploaded from PC.

Apple want you to use cloud technology

I'm sure I do! Not all but all the keepers. I tend not to show the whole lot to others (unless they specifically ask!) but I do usually do around 20 A4s and stick them in a folder to show people.

The iPad's inability to easily connect to cards or USB devices was what made it a PITA for my wife. She now uses a Win8 Lenovo Yoga notebook/tent/tablet thingy as a portable and display device. Far more connection friendly!

All my photos are stored on a Seagate NAS which I can access on my ipad using the Seagate app. Works fine for me.

i havent read the thread posts (its late) but i use plex... great and easy to use. set the server up on your pc/mac, point to the networked drive get the ipad app.... sorted!

Thanks - I tried plex - seemed ok, but I have returned my Mac mini now so am using picasa cloud storage and an app for my iPad that caches the images for offline viewing - picasa web albums.
