Hello There!

I know this is mostly for photography but im hoping some of you out there will know a few tips on video too!

Basically i want to start filming youtube videos. Primarily beauty ones or in that genre anyway. I have the canon 600D with an 18-55mm lens and a 50mm lens too. I filmed a youtube video last week, it was quite dark and i lost alot of detail. I filmed in natural lighting too! I had to record in a lower quality format because i got the message 'video has automatically stopped recording' and i googled it and it came up with it being an issue with my memory card it was only a grade 4 memory card although it was 64GB. I switched to my mums memory card which was a grade ten but 16GB of space and that helped. I want to be able to film in high quality but i seem to be having issues with lighting its coming up very dark even in natural lighting i have asked for soft boxes for Christmas so im hoping that will make a difference.

What manual settings should i be setting my camera to? Shutter speed etc? Which lens do you think is best to film with out of the two that i have. It dosn't continuously focus either which is annoying!

This girl films with a canon 600D. Does anyone have any idea to what lens she uses to re create these videos and do you have any tips to help me acheive the effect she uses in her videos.

Thankyou in advance!

If you look in her eyes, you can see reflections of at least one big light.

The background bokeh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bokeh) suggests a large aperture.

And the colour balance has been set to make the image look warm.

Shutter speed is usually 1/2 the framerate - so for 25 FPS, each frame lasts 1/25 second so use shutter at 1/50.

That's classic Paramount or butterfly lighting with a large soft light source, and lots of diffusion and a heap of low down reflection, all balanced with the room lighting quiet well.

If your video was dark, it was under exposed... how are you metering for the light? You're not using auto exposure are you? That's not a great idea with video as it will be constantly adjusting things as objects and people move around in the frame. Meter for your lighting, set it manually.

Most DSLRs will stop recording after 20 minutes or so. It may not be an issue with your memory card.

You can't just ask what settings to use. It doesn't work like that. What would be good here, will be different there. You use the right settings for YOUR needs, not mine. Do you want the background blurred or sharp? If blurred, you want to shoot with a wide aperture, if you need it sharp, you need to shoot with a small aperture. Your chosen aperture will then dictate your needed shutter speed. You can adjust the ISO accordingly to obtain what speed you need.

Most people will suggest shooting with a shutter speed of twice the frame rate, which makes sense, so if you're shooting at 24P, then shoot at 1/50th. However, While 24P gives a more cinematic effect, your audience will probably not give a damn, so shoot at 30FPS @ 1/60th if your camera can as it will be smoother.

How are you lighting this video? You are lighting it right? If you want yours to look like this, you need to light it. You can't re-create lighting just by settings on your camera... you need to actually set up lighting.

And one we have got past the lighting and settings, lets move onto what really makes good video shine - audio.

Now I couldn't even guess what audio setup she uses in that video, I don't have the experience, however I can say it is highly unlikely to be the on camera microphone.

Thankyou all for your answers. I can't afford an external microphone at the moment i am considering this after Christmas. Thanks for the answer on the shutter speed and i use the Bokeh method for my background. I use artificial lighting now to boost the light in my house along side day light.

I've just filmed two more videos and the lighting was perfect as was the sound but i filmed in the highest quality and the speed of the sound is brilliant however the video lags and now im back to square bloody one! haha any help on this one?

Not sure about what lens zoella uses, but I know Fleurdeforce uses a cheap sigma lens on a cannon 600 series camera.

It's all about light, you will not get away with shooting in natural light. You will need least one big soft box light, and you'll also need to adjust the White balance accordingly, probably a custom one to get a realistic skin tone.

Also if you are shooting in front of a window, block it out and only use the light from the soft boxes, as the outside light changes and will cause issues. Controlled light is the order of the day.

The video lag is more likely your computer. HD video needs a decent computer with lots of RAM and a good video card.

ohh crap! hahaha what you say about the computer makes alot of sense because when i came to play it on my camera it worked fine and on youtube i cant watch videos in hd or hd movies on netflix!!!!
should i edit it an upload it anyway or will it cause issues for other people? now im stuck lol because even when im coming to edit it all it's doing is lagging in video do you know any way around this!!

What resolution are you recording in? If your computer hardware can't deal with full HD playback then you definitely should not edit on it, while it is basic the editing interface on youtube may be enough for you to get started.

With regard to mic, I picked up a £25 taskar shotgun mic for some interview work recently, and it's a lot better than the camera internal microphone. I too couldn't justify the shell out for a rode although I might after Christmas.

oh god resolution?! haha i know im filming in 1080p? lol 30fpm lol. It must be my laptop not too sure what to do now lol people won't want to watch a lower quality video, do you know any way around this at all?

Generally folks are going to be fine with 720p videos, it's still HD after all :) The majority of youtube will be viewed on either laptops/tablets/mobiles so won't see any true benefit to 1080p.

Download VLC media player and see if your laptop can play back the video in that. Do you know what processor and memory the laptop has?

how do i check that lol!!

I watch everything in VLC and its not working at all!! This is so frustrating lol

I find that even standard resolution is OK for YouTube, it's content that determines if people want to watch. If using the on camera mic, try and hang some fabric around the walls to cut down on the echo it should improve the sound quality.
