Video onto ipod HELP

Can anayone help me out, I want to put a video file onto my ipod but it is the wrong format. Any suggestions of reliable and free software to convert avi to .mov or mpeg4.

I just did a search on google for "convert avi to mpeg4" and it comes up with dozens of them. Hope that helps.

On a Mac, use iMovie which comes preinstalled.

PC - try searching for MPEGABLE - never used it though
