Video light instead of flash.

I have read a few things lately where photographers have been using video lights instead of flash, even wedding photographers.

Maybe this has been happening forever but has passed me by, or maybe it is fairly new.

Just wondering under what circumstances you would use a video light instead of flash. Is it just a cheat or something more?

Times when there isn't enough light and you have the chance to put in a little bit of time controlling it, plus the first dance.

hear the litepanels are good for product photography,as they are just like big continous studio lights with features like a dimmer to adjust power output, however these are expensive at around £350 a pop.
