I am only just starting to explore the world of video with my DSLR. I don't want to invest in a full blown editing piece if software just yet but does anyone know of any free software out there that is available to download. I'm experimenting with s bit of time lapse.

Many thanks,

Nick

You have iMovie as standard on the Mac. The latest version is iMovie 11 but if you have 09 then I wouldn't really bother with upgrading.

As Chappers said above iMovie is really good with as standard, quicktime pro can be used for time lapse, on my mac it was part of the software bundle which I had to install only takes a few minutes

Many thanks for that I did look at iMovie but I don't find it as intuitive as other Apple software. I think I just need to practice with it.

Have a look as some of the iMovie tutorials that are around. It is a fairly powerful program that takes a little, and I do mean a little, of practice to get the hang of.

If you want a book on iMovie get the "Missing Manual" . It does mainly deal I think with iMovie 09 but there really isn't much difference between 09 and 11

For video editing on a Mac I use Final Cut Pro (7). Obviously iMovie is also available.

For timelapse I use motion to assemble the images and export them as a quicktime file, then put that into FCP. Alternatively Quicktime Pro can be used to assemble the images, though you'll have far less control over the frame size, movement, etc.

For shooting video on a DSLR check out the free prog '5DtoRGB'. It takes canon DSLR footage (not just 5D) and converts it to ProRes for you to then edit with. Converting it will take a lot of the strain off the system, as editing h.264 natively is not easy for any computer. If you put in the legwork at the beginning and convert it, you will find everything easier in your edit.
