Hi there,

I'm a bit wary of creating masses more hours of post processing work by shooting video, but I think it's going to happen regardless. I've just seen this super little video/stills essay on rural American Football which demonstrates very nicely how a bit of video slotted into a slideshow makes for a much more engaging experience. I really should have done the same thing at a number of the obscure world championships I've been covering this year.

So, what I'm after is some simple (preferably free!) video editing software that can mix stills and video from the Canon 1DIV and the Panasonic GF1, plus some sound from somewhere. My only prior experience has been with Windows Movie Maker.

I'm running an Intel i7 system with 4GB of RAM at the moment so hopefully it'll cope!

Any advice gratefully received.

iMovie works with the AVCHD video from the GF1 - not much use to you though sorry.

It's worth installing the firmware hack for the GF1 for video - gives you better quality and full manual control.

Ah - just found Windows Live Movie Maker which is a free download. It handles the .mov files from the 1DIV just fine, and has a nice drag & drop interface for clips and stills. You can trip the clips very easily.

Now for a bit of a play...

FYI, Windows Live Movie Maker also reads & handles AVCHD Lite videos from the Panasonic GF1. There's some simple trimming functionality available, as well as transitions. Seems OK if somewhat basic, but it should do what I want.
