Is it possible to tell what versions of Nikons VR system is on a particular lens?

For example are the lenses marked differently in some way for VR1 lenses as opposed to VR2?

One last thing, what specifically have Nikon improved in VR2 vs VR1?

Can't answer Jerry's question but yes mark it works and it's worth the money and essential for non tripod with lenses over 70mm. John

Looks wise, I believe the VR II will have GII on the lens, while the VR I will just have G on the lens.

For example, the 18-200 VR I, check the gold wirtting on the barrel and note the G without I or II, while the 18-200 VR II note the GII ...

18-200 VR

18-200 VR II

You will note the same GII on the 70-200 VR II ...

70-200 VR II

As for technical differences, the VR I gives you 3 stops while VR II is 4 stops; I think.

Just bought a 70-200mm f/2.8 VR ll - and yes it works - unless you can hand hold a 200mm lens @1/10th a second! It's fantastic.

Very useful article, I think I have been making some of the mistakes he mentions, i.e having VR turned on even in situations where it may not have been necessary, especially the faster shutter speeds.

Thanks for that, the markings are subtle so hadn't spotted them.

On the 70-200mm it does have Gll - also the VR is in gold and not red as on the early version.

Good article there, thank you for posting that

200mm @ 1/10 seconds, now that's some amazing feat ; but that's VR and a stable hand together, no way I could pull that with my flaky hands.

Glad to be of help :)

I have no idea why they keep it so subtle, it's a feature they ought to capitalise on big time
