Yes
does anyone know really whats out there to rival a dslr but is far easier to carry around? like the 4/3rds or micro 4/3rds or compact with a big sensor and light interchangeable lenses?
Really got to get something thats sharp and great to use to bring the joy back to taking photographs again:(

Um, well ok, failing one of the EP1, Sony NEX types, or a DSLR, how about a bridge? Light (ish), but no lens swappy fun.

Maybe the Fuji X100, though can't swap lenses.

Or go back in time and get a film rangefinder?

Or type "system camera" into one of the retailers search boxes and see what comes up other than evil cameras.

not necessarily- I want a smaller than DSLR to carry around and take fast sharp pictures, the dslr and heavy f2.8 sits at home to often and I miss some good opportunities as it wasnt planned

Soooo what exactly is wrong with an EVIL camera? You have a body that is much smaller than a DSLR, and the option to change the lenses. And if you go down the legacy lens route, you have a wealth of lenses that are incredibly cheap yet fast (a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 can be had for about £25).

If you want even smaller, then you'd probably have to go for a high end compact. S95, LX5 etc.

Unless you have a healthy budget, in which case maybe an X100 or a Leica would be more suited :naughty:

You've just described an EVIL exactly!

Though personally, if I ever have the cash spare, I'll be going Fuji X100. Basically a super-spec EVIL but super-simple with the fixed f/2 lens. If that little beauty doesn't bring a smile back, nothing will :)

Keeping the DSLR for anything serious though.

I would have suggested Fuji X100 too.

But they are much smaller than a DSLR if you get the right one.

I purchased a GF1 some months ago with the 20mm F1.7 lens and is is a superb camera to carry about. About the size of a large compact - excellent lens - all the controls you get on a DSLR.

The olympus E-PL2 or 1 is another great little camera, can also take the 20mm F1.7 but you get the added bonus of in body stabilisation.

Seriously, have a proper look at them. Mine got me out of a photographic rut definitly.

anything that requires carrying a bag means IMO that I might as well have the IQ of the dslr. Looks like its going to be the Oly XZ-1, havent seen one bad report yet- will get one and post pics for all to laugh at and say "should've got an LX5 S95 GF1 G1 NEX EPL1" etc etc;)

Have just bought an Olympus XZ-1 and so far am very happy with it. The image quality is very good and the lens much better than any compact I have used before - would highly recommend it.

Thanks Kaolin, do you mind if I ask where and how much? any links to some pics you've taken with it?

Anything you carry with you and you use regularly will make you enjoy photography again. Right now, my 550D is merely a means of recording what the 100-400 sees, and I only use it for dedicated wildlife jaunts. For everything else, I use my compact - a G12.

If that's not small enough, the XZ1, the S95, or any of the Powershots offer creativity and fun at a fraction of the price these things were 10 years ago....

Go for it!

Had the same wish. Will probably get XZ1 tomorrow but will take a quick look at the

Thanks for the info. Snapshot is a darned useful site. Think the oly will be the one as it still has f2.5 at the tele end. Though after all the investment, should just take out the dslr more:)

I've had lots of experience with the Panasonic Lumix range, and therefore echo those that have recommended those. Fantastic.

Here's an example why I don't take the dslr out as much- maybe a few of you will know this scenario- went to the park today- absolutely mobbed and hundreds of kids as you would expect, anyone taking pics with their compacts looked 'normal' if you know what I mean, only saw one dslr and he looked so out of place and I saw him getting lots of looks- he was with family so perfectly normal- but it's just getting that way I feel so self conscious and worried what people think I'm up to, sad I know but that's the unfortunate way it is out there and one reason I've bought a compact.

I'd have thought it would be the other way around. You're not going to attract attention to yourself with a large body camera and lens, looking almost like a pro to the uninitiated. You'd more likely look dodgy wandering around with a pocket camera, and having no family or kids of your own with you.

I bought mine from Jacobs (£399) tried to get it from a independent dealer but they had no stock and no likely date for delievery. Will post some pics tomorrow have not been out with it yet, have been busy with my dSLR in the lovely weather.

Since the OP hasn't specified a price it sounds like a perfect Leica M9 candidate. Never used one but seen very nice results with them, they arn't totally crazy money compared to a top end Canon or Nikon system either.

I think a lot of DSLR users don't help themselves, as they often have the cam on a "loud" strap round their neck so the cam hangs right in front of them, and they often make it more obvious by having a long zoom attached.

I prefer to carry my cam on a Blackrapid RS7 strap so it hangs next to my hip, and is barely visible from the front.

Using a prime instead of a zoom makes it even more discreet and makes you "zoom with your feet" which often gives better shots.

Have to agree with you, I feel a bit self conscious when I'm out and about with my SLR but since I've switched to a Q Strap (Black Rapid Basically) and prime lenses I don't feel so bothered about it.

Couldn't agree more, a fixed lens will make you think more about what you are doing. You will find yourself spending more time looking for and composing the shot rather than firing off at distant objects.

Have a look at the m43 offerings from Panasonic and Oly with primes, Sigma DP2x, Fiji X100 or my favourite, Leica X1. APS size sensor and superb IQ. Its just so much fun to use.
