Very cool mirage!

Cool :)

That's great. I've seen it happen, but never when I had a camera.

You'd think the BBC would be able to level the horizon on those pics huh?

I saw the photo in news. The difference between the bbc article photo compared to the examples in this thread is that I can rationalise the TP photos. The photos in this thread are easy to see once studied that the ships are sat on the sea and have been taken from high up with the ships sat between the horizon and the coast. The BBC article photo is of a ship sat on the horizon and it’s the bending of light caused by atmospheric conditions that’s making it appear above the horizon. The article says objects beyond the horizon can appear below the horizon too.

Yes. And there's a theory that there was a false horizon, caused by the Labrador Current, that effectively hid the Titanic iceberg from sight until it was too late. And, for the same reason, the Californian (which was very close by and which failed to respond to their distress rockets) may not have had the clear sight of them that was claimed.

But that may not be correct, in theory she was only about 5 miles away but it was discovered in 1985 when the wreck of the Titanic was discovered, that she was actually 15 miles away, probably due to the Titanic transmitting an incorrect distress position - which also explains why the Carpathia seemed to achieve an impossible speed on her rescue run - she was 10 miles closer than expected.
