vero

I tried it a few years ago when they were new, but it seemed pretty dead.
I noticed they were getting a lot of attention on YouTube just recently so have signed up again and it looks a lot more lively now.

I’ve posted three image so far and have picked up a few followers and likes. Definitely more activity than Flickr. I’m not interested I. Farcebook and instagram so hopefully VERO will be “the” place for photographers.

Insta really are now pursuing "reels" and video content - and that's fine but for still's it's not the one. It never really was with very restricted aspect ratio's and a focus on phone photography and "filters". You'd have to resize your images then download to your smart phone to upload, even back in the day when less folk had them.

There is a lot of talent on Instagram - but it isn't quite tailored to what the bulk of us still shooters like. Vero/Flickr do the job better.

Also Instagram has become a very political place with all sorts of virtue signalling, left leaning, globalist authoritarian types ruling the roost and throttling those who dare to see the world differently to their self appointed in their eyes political correct world view.

I use it, as I like some of the people I've gotten to know on IG - but I don't like it.

I moved over to Vero too and really like it. Instagram has way too many reels and ads now for me personally. Give it a go you won’t be disappointed.

I was persuaded to try Instagram last year but never really gelled with it so I’ve also moved over to VERO. I’m still not 100% sure if it’s for me but as someone who is not social media oriented it’s probably better than the alternatives

Like many, I've found Instagram to be moving away from what I want it to be - its trying to compete with TikTok - so I've just signed up for Vero. @norwichphoto
However, I'll still be using Instagram as its got a massive userbase.

I have never had to download to a phone, I have always uploaded photos from my PC to Instagram.

For me it is a rather pointless platform, but for those who need to be seen, they have to go where the users are, and follow trends :)

I don't mind reels, I upload some myself either bts style or drone clips, but I don't want to see Tiktok style videos of people fighting over a parking space outside B&M or how to clean your washing machine with a lemon juice mixture....

I can't get it on my phone (android not compatible blah blah message), but will try the desktop when I get back from hols, and see what it's like.

How old is your phone ? The Vero website says it is compatible with Android v6 (Marshmallow - launched in 2015) and above.
Huawei P19 running android 12... Cleared data and cache from play store, but still comes up with the same issue. No worries though, as I'd prefer to use desktop anyway. Just thought I'd give it a try.

That might well be the case.

Fad ! you mean people have actually started to use it now ( it was used by a few music artist early on I remember KT Tunstall was on), I've been a member for years, but not used in the few. I see it's now free for life, it was going to be a paid for service apart from the very early members like me, I'll see if I can remember my login details now :D

So I got back on checked the date of my first post, Sep 2018 so only 4 years ago, newer than I thought :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

IT was free for life a few years ago and still is for new adopters. It looks like they are using that to lure in subscribers and then plan on charging an annual fee at some point.

Hopefully it's not a stupid price but if it prevents photos of peoples lunch and adverts then I think it's a good things.

I'm there Ben.Cremin

Instagram was good because of the numbers using it, it was a good way to get your work seen by people - if the algorithm was being kind!

I suspect if Vero doesn't get the numbers or offer up something else, then people may flock back to instagram. I also wonder if enough people leave Instagram then perhaps some changes might get made

What I don't like about Vero is that they want to install an app on my desktop computer. Thanks, but I don't need something else installed on my computer. Why they are unable to make a web browser interface is beyond me...
And you have to install the app on your phone to register.

No thanks!

I understand we will get ads as IG needs to make revenue, however the bloody reels are bloody annoying ! ! ! ! !

First world problems hey!

I understand what you are saying, however in actuallity I think people even living outside the "first world" would have this problem. Cameras / photography are prevalent all around the world now.

I totally don't like the idea there is no simple website. So I'm out

What is the problem with a small desktop app? It's 500Mb on my Mac. If you can't fit that on your desktop you have other more important issues to deal with.

I quite like the app. The UI is sleek and the app means is not easy for people to just lift images.

While you can't signup on the desktop app. It is in Beta so give it a chance.

Also if you are just looking for a webpage to point clients to to view your profile then there is a webpage.

2 problems.

1. Potential customers certainly won't have it and won't be using = waste of time.
2. The app may or may not contain any trackers and ads that are next to impossible to control

Your choice but I'm firmly out

1. As I pointed out in my last post, there is a webpage for you to display your profile and images, but I don't think Vero is the place for interacting with customers anyway and I hope it never does, because as soon as it does, it will just become another Instagram.

2. Honestly who cares? I'm on a desktop, what can they track?

Yes I'm using it, @richcrawfordphoto on there. Seems to be a good community on there. It's quieter than Instagram but nicer to use.

That might well be the case.
I think that is the case, it works flawlessly on my Pixel 6.

It's an app. How are you supposed to register for and use an app, without installing the app?
I understand we will get ads as IG needs to make revenue, however the bloody reels are bloody annoying ! ! ! ! !
You can turn them off. Next time you get a suggested Reel from someone you don't follow, tap the three dots in the top right corner. A small menu will pop up. Say you're not interested in this, and then it will give you the option to Snooze all recommended posts for 30 days. Massively improves the app. You can also tap the Instagram logo at the top of the app and choose the Following feed, which only shows you posts from accounts you follow, in chronological order

I think you got it wrong, I installed it on the PC, but you can't register using a PC, you have to install it on a phone first to register.

Please credit people with a bit of common sense :)

The desktop app is in Beta so may well support signing up via the app in the future.

In the meantime though is it really a huge problem to download a mobile app, sign up and then delete the app if you don't want to use it. That's just common sense ;)

Yes, that is what I did, but I don't put apps on my phone.
They are in fact looking at some information on your phone during the registration process, before you have had chance to choose. And when you uninstall

What information are they looking at.

I was asked if I wanted to give the app access to my photos (obviously so I can upload images), I declined,
I was asked if I wanted to give access to my contacts (so the app can connect me to people I know), I declined.

All these people going on about their data, what exactly are you all hiding?

They are looking at the phone details for the number, and I guess other numbers in your contact list as well.

I don't think anyone has anything to hide, why would not wanting you contacts and personal data spread around mean any one has something to hide?

If you're on the internet your data is being harvested, simple as that. This website knows your IP address, what device you're using to access the forum, the OS, all sorts of stuff. Your phone is way, way more secure than your desktop as it runs a sandboxed OS and usually has to ask for explicit permission to access things like photos, contacts or location data. I'd install an app on my phone over having it on my PC any day

I've signed up and I like it. I'm still working my way around it but it seems to me that it's a place for photographers to interact and share their work rather than obtain new clients. I've come across a couple of local photographers I was unaware of and it's great to see their interpretation of familiar scenes. It does seem dependant on people tagging the images but the big plus for me is the photos can be displayed as the photographer intended e.g. panoramic etc and not confined to the 1:1 crop favoured by IG. As already mentioned it doesn't bog you down in TikTok style videos.

I guess your view is on what your requirements and expectations are from the platform

Yes, the ask for access so that they can connect you to people you know in the app. You have the option to decline access. Nothing sinister there.

It is done while you are registering, as I said before you have the choice.

You can get browser plugins to mitigate the harvesting of data. For instance, I use Ghostery to block trackers, finger-printers etc. So yes, this forum knows I have logged in, but it is not shared with anyone else. And this forum is an angel compared to others out there. Another well-known photo site / forum has 3 different individual trackers, and that is far from the worst out there.

I think everyone is aware of how the online world works and I'm all for protecting personal data that can be used for spurious purposes, but I do think that some people take this far too far and should be wearing tin foil hats.

There's also, IME, a large intersection between that group and the group of people that expect online services to be free.

On the topic, I love the idea that there's a Veroboard and people are finding it's full of holes ;)

That was my first thought, but there are not many who would understand I don't think :)
