How i would do it (might not be exactly the same);

Duplicate layer, add layer mask to new layer, apply image to new layer mask making sure to check invert. Select original layer and fill with 100% white. Merge both layers.

Desaturate the image a little to taste. Then either add some contrast, or; duplicate layer and set new layer to overlay, then merge layers again.

That would be ball park depending on the original image ofcourse, original needs to be high key to begin with.

It really is simple in principle. Once you start to get used to photoshop, it will become more intuitive. I found PS bewildering at first, but once you figure out how the layers/masks work it all comes together and then you can really be creative.

If you have trouble with what i said, let me know and i'll write it down in more detail.

I wonder if this forum would benefit from a sticky with a list of tutorials in it. It would be nice if us members made them, but even if its just link to youtube videos it might help.:thinking:
