Beginner Veil problems

I shoot a lot of sunset/sunrise landscape shots. Often if I have some dark shadow areas against a bright sky, my pics end up with some veil over the dark areas (is veil the correct term?).

Even if I expose for the dark areas and make a composite shot, the veil still appears. Current lens is a Canon FD 24mm multicoated SSC on a Sony A7.

Any pointers appreciated

It's Lens flare. It's caused by light entering the lens directly and bouncing about off all the internal surfaces.

Don't use filters, use the best lens you can, use a lens hood.
