HM gov kindly gave 6 month extended MOTs year, & I was fortunate to be able to take advantage of this.
However, the only reason I remembered to get my car tested this month, was that the testing station I usually use wrote to me & offered a discount.

I wonder how many other people will forget, as I would have?

Perhaps just me, but I never saw it as an advantage to have a car with no MOT

I was lucky, my local garage stayed open throughout as did many others, so never had to defer the MOT

You shouldn’t need a bit of paper to tell you if your car is road worthy or not or to prompt you to fix something that needs fixing.

But the vast majority of people have very little mechanical knowledge.

I know someone who had their car MOT'd last week. The extention meant they forgot all about it previously and it actually ran out in March or something.....

Mine was always 30th April but it's sometime in July now.

Some things you don't realise, well unless you are going to crawl about under the car.
My last MOT showed up a perishing gaiter on the front steering, it was close to splitting, although not a failure
it did show as an advisory so was fixed, there are many other things too but you obviously know all about these
things, my mechanic did keep the old one to show me although I do trust him not to try an rip people off

Always have mine done with the service so little point defering, just means 2 trips to a garage instead of 1, 2 days where i have to fit stuff around not having a car for a period of time.

Yes some things are not visible and although I check everything I can I’m not a mechanic so take my car to somewhere I trust
My bikes are different, I rebuilt one of them and do all my own maintenance on the others I still take them for an Mot to someone who I know will check them over properly as safety is important and I may miss something

Whilst I am fairly competent with spanners, I don't know of many people who personally have a 2 post car lift, brake testing and emissions testing equipment lying around in their garage.

I do the same with my Mk1 Escort. I could declare it MOT exempt but I'd much rather it was checked every year just in case.

Lucky he/she didn't drive past a police ANPR car or roadside speed-check van.

Thanks - I haven't seen that before.
You can also go on this site, to make sure that you vehicle is taxed and MOT'd. I do it quite regularly just to be on the safe side, particularly since last year with the MOT holiday.

Quite so!
I've set setup an email alert now, thanks to Kev's comment.

i think i have it setup as a DVLA reminder, but seeing as we only have 1 car now and have sold both our motorbikes prior to retiring things are pretty easy to remember

Spooky - I have just received a text from the garage that did my service and MOT last year asking if I want them to do it again, I wonder if he is a member on here :D

Me, I did. Just got the MOT done. I was musing about the wife's MOT and thought mine's not due until May. Ding, ding, alarm! Hang on, government extended it by six months. Sure enough, my MOT had run out on the first of October this year and I'd been driving around for two weeks before I realised; it's not the first time, I did it on my motorbike for over six weeks. Really must get that DVLA reminder, shame they charge for it.

Their site says 'Sign up to get free reminders by text message or email when your MOT is due.'

Even if it was chargeable, it would be less than £1000 fine.

Our Leon went through last week, 65 plate, no problems.

Our Megane gets done in a few weeks time, 62 plate.

I have a post it on the side of our fridge, with all the relevant dates on (MOT, Tax etc) just for peace of mind and I check it periodically. Despite reminders being set up, I still check them. Having 3 vehicles, 2 cars and a motorbike, it would be easy to overlook and just one time could land one of us in trouble.

MOTs are a good thing and even if I had an exempt vehicle, I would still get it periodically checked. Surely these checks are even more relavant on older vehicles? I can do the basics, I've even changed head gaskets at the side of the road back in the day but to really get into checks, you need a pit at least but a lift is far better, not something the average motorist has.

That’s at least 6 reminders. Wouldn’t reminders on phone/computer be better?

I think Wifey has those set up too. Thinking about it, it's 9 reminders, including insurance. We do of course get paper reminders for tax and insurance but I'm a pencil and paper kind of guy and like it hand written on a post it too, reassurance at a glance. ;)

My motorbike is sorned through the winter, which needs another reminder come the Springtime run. :$

Yes, I thought so, and it sounds like you probably have other things like that anyway — other insurances, servicing etc. The trouble with fridge notes etc is you ’see’ them every day so there’s nothing to draw your attention — OK for things like ‘emergency’ numbers that you go to look for but otherwise … .

Thank you for that, I could have sworn they charged for the service, did they once upon a time?

Anyway, signed up for my van and my motorbike. Hopefully won't forget again now.

ive got reminders set up, but i also try and get the mot done just around the insurance and tax reminders as a secondary precaution
