Variable nd filter advice

As the title states looking to spend my Xmas money I haven't received yet. Narrowed it down to 3

Cokin harmony £50
Maraumi DHG £ 57
Hoya £61

Am tempted by Maraumi as I have a polariser already which is awesome. Any kind folk have any advice or experience or using any of the above .many thanks and merry Xmas to you all . Cheers

Best advice is simply, don't. If you use a vari-nd on any kind of widish lens towards the strongest ND setting, then you will begin to get a dark cross appear right across the image. Just put vari nd filter problems into google images...
 
I have two of them - because I couldn't believe that the crappiness of the first one was typical.

It was.
 
Buy the one recommended by some respected professional photographers.

Cheers for the advice. Thought it was just the low end ones.took hoopyuk's advice and it seems even the high end ones have problems. Will think again now. I have seen hoya pro nd's for around £17-25 each could buy 3 for same price. Could I stack these in different combinations to achieve a wider range or does stacking come with it's own drawbacks . Cheers

They all do it, even the £300 ones. It's characteristic of the cross-polarisers used.

Yes, you can stack ND filters but it's really not a good idea. Lots of threads on very dark ND filters if you search, but be aware that ND8 is only a 3-stops ND, not eight!.
 
For Variable ND try B+W or Tiffen but prepare to spend money.
