I folks had the chance to borrow someone 8 stop ND filter yesterday, thought it was great and looking to buy one.

I have cone across one that is variable 2 through to 8 exposure stops. So to the point, has anyone got one/ used one of these and are they any good.

Don't get a variable one. All vari-NDs use cross polarisers and, regardless of cost, they all form a dark cross right over the image at higher densities which makes them unusable with wide-angles.

The Lightcraft Workshop ND500 is pretty good, and cheapest. From Premier Ink.

I've just started using a Lightcraft Workshop variable ND filter for video work. For that its great but for photos it definatly results in a loss of sharpness and is only really a 3 stop filter for UWA lens. Definatly go for fixed ND's for photos.
