After weeks of trying to sell it, today I sold my Canon 24-105 f/4L lens to MPB for £360! Just two years ago I purchased the same lens for £500...

Today I saw a 17-40 f/4L go for £300!

Is the value of these slightly 'older' L lenses falling? It seems like it to me and at quite an alarming rate. It makes me wonder how long one should be holding on to gear for so as to maintain a good resale value.

I'm always amazed at the general lack of depreciation of photo gear! But anyway, surely you buy gear to use it rather than to trade it?

Indeed, but as time goes on some gear becomes redundant i.e. I bought a 24-70 recently and now the 24-105 doesn't get out much!

don't you buy it to use it? In the second example thats more then half its retail with no idea of age or condition

Absolutely, it has been one of my most used lenses, but now I have the 24-70 it seems to be gathering dust. I'd say the condition is excellent considering it's age (2008 date code)

Buy a highly revered Sigma lens in Pentax mount (ie 100-300 f4 EX) and watch the value rise...never lot money on PK-AF fit Sigma EX lenses

MBP have to make a profit so will often buy kit for lower than it can be resold for.

Generally about 2/3 of the sell price is what they buy for.

That's under £1.40 / week as a hire. Cheap!

Say thank you to the loud mirrorless brigade. They can't just enjoy their gear, they have to destroy fun for dSLR users all along. If only people weren't obsessed with useless fashion and hipster theories....

Actually mirrorless is a lot quieter without a mirror slapping about in there.... :p :runaway:

5D3 is pretty quiet in silent mode, and it is not alone. However the person behind the mirrorless body usually feels compelled to shout out a comment about how silent it was... There goes the tiny advantage.

Are you just trying to be argumentative or is there any real point hidden somewhere amongst that lot?

This requires a Can't Tell if Serious meme.

It is black on white (theme depending :) ) so it can't be that difficult to interpret

got to love Pentax!!! ;-)

It just came to my mind that there is now a very good reason to get rid of 17-40s cheap. It was never the best Canon's optic, and with new 16-35mm f/4L on the market everyone is in the rush to upgrade, leaving the obsolete lens unloved and unwanted... Or so it seems.
