Our trusty Dyson vacuum cleaner has finally given up and is probably not worth the expense of repairing, so I quite fancy something light and easy to handle was wondering if anybody has had any experiences with battery operated devices. The unit Ive been drawn to is the Gtech Air ram and the Gtech multi cordless. Are they any good? any thoughts would be appreciated before i go and splash out £300

My mother in law has one it's ok as a backup as a quick to reach thing but I would still want a proper one too I think.

Wife wanted a new vacuum cleaner as she found our upright dyson heavy (old model) - we went and had a good look round and opted for the new dyson cylinder machine - lighter and significantly easier to lift and move around. I still use the old Dyson as didn't have a problem with the weight, but the new cylinder one is a lot easier to move / manage about.

Only issue is its not quiet as easy to store...

We have 2 dyson cordless models, the V6 absolute and V6 total clean, would never use a corded again. We did try the new V8 but sent it back as it didn't do as good as the V6

Another vote here for the Dyson V6 Absolute. (y)

Thanks everybody for your thoughts:) looks like its Dyson then. One thing that is worrying me is the battery life on the V6 absolute it seems to vary between 6 Min and 20 min depending on what setting your on.

I'd have another think about the repair option - DIY. As I understand it every bit of it can be replaced with a new unit easy enough.

I'm not in any way mechanical but I've managed to keep our Dyson running for years - three repairs and counting.

Worth a shot against 300 notes?

Cheers for that Steve but ours is way past it and heavy so I think its definitely time for an upgrade

I had a couple of DC07's ( types) over many years, when the last one died recently, I got a Dyson DC 40 Animal from the dyson referb shop for £160 ( about half price) its a lot lighter and more manoeuvrable, once you get used to the ball thing. ( Its a bit of a PITA initially )
It looked like it was unused TBH, the only down side is you only get 2 years warranty instead of the standard 5 years.
I'm more than happy with it.

We have one of the small days on animals and it's great. We also have the handheld g-tech which is very useful for stairs and quick clean ups. It works pretty well.

Only thing to be aware of if ordering a g-tech is you will be bombarded with emails and post forever more trying to sell you more.

If you've mainly got hard flooring, the G-tech is great, but for carpets, you really can't beat a Dyson imho.

Had dysons but the best is a Henry Hoover by miles
Would be my recommendation have them at work run for hours each day industrial cleaning companies favour them not much to go wrong they just suck :) had mine at home for 10yrs plus and quieter than most

Changed my Dyson for a Meile , haven't looked back. Also got her indoors a Dyson v6 cordless for her birthday..... Its great for a quick clean up, but tend to have to use the turbo button which reduces battery life. No great shakes as it is easy to use and is used for a quick clean and then put back on its charger unit.

Romance isnt dead then ! lol

Double post

I have the dyson ball cleaner - and after a trip to A&E found out it wasn't what I thought it was :D

Similar experience for a friend of mine when as a teenager, it was `recommended` he tried the hoover method to release his frustration. ;)

The brush on his Mum's upright vac didn't have the desired effect. :D

Still alive. It was better than the fancy mop she got the previous year. Apparently it was too much hassle to get the mop and bucket from the garage, so I got one of those Flash mops with a squirty thing.

And a subscription for refils from Amazon....

(she got make up and jewellery and a night out as well before I am crucified.......)

Thanks everybody for your inputs and advice...........still undecided, I mean you know how it goes .........get it wrong and you never hear the last of it:) get it right and it was her indoors idea:D
Andrew, think I'll steer clear of the Dyson Ball Cleaner sounds a bit to painful to me:D and Meeten I wouldn't dare give her vacuum cleaner for her birthday as I would, as somebody has already said, i'd be making a visit to my local A&E;)

Better choose the easiest one for a proctologist to remove if you do get her one as a gift!

There's a Dyson on groupon just now. £179.99 and priced at 369.99 in Argos and Tesco. DC50 multi floor is it's model number.

I bought this Currys special for £50... Does the job. Would I like a dyspn? Totally - but can't justify that amount. A mate has the V6 absolute - and it is very snazzy mind you! ImageUploadedByTalk Photography Forums1467133794.003277.jpg

I've got the Dyson DC44 Animal cordless. It works great, I can do my whole house (3 bed upstairs, hard ground floor) on one charge, rarely need to turn on turbo mode. It has completely replaced the wired vacuum cleaner, plus it doubles as a hand-held quick clean-up vacuum cleaner.

I've also used Dyson V6 Total Clean in my house one (because overseas friend wanted it and got me to test it before ship it to them, Dyson warranty isn't world wide). It works just as well, non-turbo mode has similar sucking power to my DC44, turbo mode sucks harder ;), the bigger motorhead is great. But I feel the new soft head in Total Clean package doesn't add much to the package, the motorhead already does it all.

I think it goes like this: (my guess from component compatibility and external design)
First gen: DC35 -> DC44 (midlife update)
Second gen: DC58 --> V6 series (rename) -> V8 series (midlife update)

Remember, if it used to take you 1 hour to do the house, it would probably take you 30-40min with a cordless because you no longer has to deal with the cable, that means 20min battery life is more than enough because you won't keep it turned on when you are not hovering.

There's also the Dyson refurbished ebay outlet, 1 year warranty and item seems like new. Both of the Dysons I mentioned above are purchased from here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_saslop=1&_sasl=dyson_outlet&_sop=10

The problem is with all cordless items they are only as good as the battery life (not charge and then discharge) they all die in a few years then it's off to the tip with them and that means a very costly item on a per year bases. Also it's not in the interest of the maker to have an ever lasting supply of replacement batteries so they discontinue making them and it's off to the tip again.

You can easily buy replacements directly from Dyson.

Cost of replacement battery is one of the reason I bought DC44: Cheap third party battery http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vacuum-Cl...736406?hash=item3600af8356:g:wLoAAOSwie5XS7Kt
V6 batteries are around twice the price.

They are all Li-on battery, they should continue to work down to 80% after many years and many cycles. I'm not worried with my battery, in fact I've hooked the charger up to a plug controlled by Raspberry Pi that only charges it when there's excess solar power. It gets turned on/off many times during a windy cloudy day. Still lasts like new. 100% renewable powered vacuum cleaner! :D

That's where I bought mine from (DC 40 Animal) as mentioned above, I'm very happy with it.
