Having just returned a Dell P2416D (faulty flickering screen), I chose a Benq GW2760HS as a replacement. I knew there was an issue with 'black crush' but nothing as bad as I'm currently getting.

On this test screen, I can only distinguish box 10 (barely) and upwards. With the lowest gamma setting, I can just about see box 6. I'm using very similar settings given for this monitor on TFTCentral.

I knew I should have gone for the more expensive Dell U2515H from the get-go.

Are VA screens a total no go for editing or do you get what you pay for?

I'm also returning the Benq as it just isn't usable, not only for photo editing, but for dark scenes in films and games.

VA screens are usually excellent. Prior to this screen I have now (Eizo GC303W) I had the VA equivalent (Eizo SX3031W) and it was superb. As with all VA screens there were gamma shifts when viewing at an angle... but I never sat at it from an angle (who does if it's their main work screen?). I distinctly remember being able to discern almost all the black boxes in the lagom test. I think I could just about discern box 2... certainly 3. If you can only just make out box 6 then you've got it set up wrong, surely. No screen is THAT bad. Box 6 is screamingly obvious here on mine. I can make out box 2 in fact... which a decent screen should be able to do.

Have you calibrated it? If not, how are you making sure it's set up correctly?

VA screens are generally very good, and despite the myth of black crushing, I actually prefer blacks on them, as IPS screens can't actually produce a pure black in the same way.

It's either faulty, or it's badly set up. Can you calibrate it?
