I've been going to post this for a while but seeing Nick (Norters) comment in the 'Show us yours...' thread about using the Epson software reminded me that I was looking forward to some collected wisdom arising from the TP scanner test.

I have a V500 and confess to being rather baffled by the choices its software makes. For instance, why does it set the output histogram settings to only use the levels between about 20 and 220 (can't remember the exact numbers now)?
It seems to me that it should use the whole 0 to 255 range... And why doesn't it remember it when I change this?

So, I'd be pleased to hear from any of you who would care to share your methods for scanning B&W or colour with the V500.

Thanks!!!

Thanks for that Alastair, that will come in very handy.

I follow the advice in Alastair's link and it has definitely improved my scans. I still think I need to improve them though so any other advice would be appreciated.

The histogram technique certainly helps, having the separate channels is very useful with Velvia; as Velvia tends to give red shadows when scanned but if you bring up the red channel you can move the black triangle and clip out the red in the dark areas and have normal looking shadows.

Extra things usually recommended are the BetterScanning holders or the ScanAssist inserts if the holders are too pricey, they help to keep film flat and improve sharpness with the standard Epson holders. There's also pricey IT8.7 profile slides to help get the correct colours after scanning, look like they would be worth it if you scan a lot.

The BetterScanning holder does work better than the standard Epson holder, but remember the import duties.. ..

I use the betterscanning holders for 120 and it really does make a difference. The biggest bonus is that it holds the negative flat and therefore gives the sharpest scan across the whole frame. The detail I am getting out of my rolleiflex 6x6 is really an eye opener!

How are the ScanAssist ones? £25 for a 35mm and a 120 might be a decent investment.

How much did your better scanning cost to get sent over Menthel? i'm scanning right now, the 35mm holders are fine but the 120 design is terrible.

Yes i'd like to know the price of those BetterScanning ones as the maker didn't put any prices on the website, if it costs like a £100 to import them then i'll give it a miss.

It's $79.95 to buy, but then postage costs..

I've found out it's about $14 for postage, but i have no clue if you get charged import tax for a product like that..

I can't help I am afraid. Mine came with my v700 when I bought it second hand!
